Course Information:
SIRS and sepsis are complex and life-threatening conditions that require prompt recognition and treatment. This lecture will review the pathophysiology and diagnostic criteria of SIRS and sepsis, as well as the latest evidence-based treatment strategies. We discuss the importance of early detection and intervention in improving patient outcomes and the role veterinary technicians play in providing treatment for these critical patients. By the end of this lecture, you will have a thorough understanding of key concepts and strategies for managing SIRS and sepsis to provide optimal patient care.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the differences between SIRS, Sepsis, and Septic Shock.
  • Define SIRS and Sepsis.
  • Understand the pathophysiology that can lead to SIRS, Sepsis, and Septic Shock.
  • Utilize the treatment options available.
  • Understand your role as a veterinary technician in recognizing and treating SIRS, Sepsis, and Septic Shock.
Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate VSPN CE course will be open for enrollment to veterinary technicians/technologists, support staff, veterinary teams, etc. actively interested shock, sepsis and emergency medicine.
Credit Approval: This program has been approved for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.(20-1025132)

Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session July 6): SIRS/Sepsis: The Sickest of the Sick
The RTS will cover how to recognize the signs of SIRS/Sepsis and an understanding of the pathophysiology involved with these processes. Treatment options and the technician’s role in managing these critical patients will also be discussed.

Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. To learn more about the requirements for earning a CE certificate, please refer to Receiving Your CE Credit and Course Completion Certificate.

Course Materials: Course materials will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session.
