Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. *The instructors for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This intermediate course is focused towards the veterinary technician and veterinary assistant who sees exotic small mammal patients in practice or has an interest in learning about exotic small mammal nursing care.
VSPN CE Course: Open to VIN and VSPN members. This course is approved by RACE for veterinary technicians/technologists (RACE program #22-17656). “This program (22-17656) has been approved by AAVSB RACE to offer a total of 6 CE Credits, with a maximum of 6 CE Credits being available to any individual veterinary technician/technologist. This RACE approval is for the subject matter categories of: Scientific, using the delivery method of Interactive-Distance: (Web-based, Teleconference or Audio-Conference). This approval is valid in jurisdictions which recognize AAVSB RACE; however, participants are responsible for ascertaining each board’s CE requirements.”

Course Description:
This course will teach participants the nursing skills needed to successfully care for exotic small mammals such as rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other small rodents in a clinical setting. This interactive class will discuss how to properly house and care for these unique species as well as perform a proper physical examination. Participants will also learn a variety of nursing skills such as venipuncture techniques, catheterization sites and fluid therapy routes, radiographic positioning, diagnostic sample collection and syringe/hand feeding techniques. This class can be used for CE credit for the AVTCP Exotic Companion Animal VTS application.

Week 1 (Real Time Session April 9): Basic Husbandry and Hospitalization
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 2 (Real Time Session April 23): Physical Examination and Venipuncture Techniques Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 3 (Real Time Session April 30): Fluid Therapy, Catheterization and Basic Stabilization Techniques Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Week 4 (Real Time Session May 7): Radiographic Positioning, Diagnostic Sampling and Nursing Care Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Instructor:
Jody Nugent-Deal, RVT, VTS (Anesthesia/Analgesia, Clinical Practice-Exotic Companion Animal) has worked for the University of California-Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital since 1999, working in the companion exotics department for 10 years and currently the small animal anesthesia department where she is the supervisor. Ms. Nugent-Deal is a founding member of the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice and is the executive secretary for the group as well as the appeals committee chair. Jody is an active member with the Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia and Analgesia having served on the nominations, credentials and appeals committees. Jody is currently a Member At Large for the AVTAA. Jody also serves on the board for CaRVTA. Ms. Nugent-Deal has lectured throughout North America since 2000 on anesthesia and various exotic animal topics. Jody has published numerous articles and book chapters for both canine/feline and exotic animal medicine and anesthesia topics. Jody is an instructor for both VSPN, VetMedTeam and PennFoster Veterinary Technician Program. She has a special interest in anesthesia, analgesia, pain management and critical care in exotics and dogs and cats. In Jody’s spare time, she loves to read, visit the ocean, run, road and mountain bike.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
