Perhaps you fear rejection or aren’t sure what to do next when your requests are denied. This course will focus on differentiating between types of requests, learning how to make requests more effectively, and becoming more confident when asking for what you need. Rejection and following up after a request is denied will also be discussed. Course Agenda:

Week 1 (Real Time Session September 13): Types of Requests and Making Effective Requests
This session will explore the types of requests, including indirect, direct, demands, implied requests, manipulation, persuasion, requests for connection, and requests for action. We will also consider what is not a request and where we go wrong when we think we are making requests. We will discuss vulnerability and creating connection in relation to requests. The six principles of influence, anchoring and framing will also be discussed. Nonviolent communication and empathy when making requests will also be covered.

Week 2 (Real Time Session September 20): Rejection as an Opportunity and Making Requests
This session will discuss how fear of rejection can create avoidance of making requests. Following up on requests that are denied will be covered. We will explore viewing rejection as an opportunity. Decision making on the part of the receiver will also be discussed. We will consider the stories we tell ourselves about “no”. We will explore having empathy for the receiver, reflective vs. reactive decision making, and clarity about how the kind of requests you are making affects the receiver. This session will also discuss practical examples of how to phrase requests and follow ups after “no”.
