Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session is up to 1 hour in length. For more information, please visit the CE Practice Area.

*The instructors for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course is designed for veterinary technicians and assistants that have been promoted to a management position or would like to pursue management in the future.
VSPN CE Course: This course has been RACE approved for veterinary technicians only. This course is approved by the VHMA for CVPM credits. (RACE program #22-12987; VHMA program #14-01). The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.

Course Description:
Are you a lead technician or in middle management at your clinic? Do you want to be? Do you have previous management experience? We will be examining the path to become a lead technician, how to manage a team, how to perform human resource functions, how to create a productive clinic culture and how to work with coworkers and upper management. You will be given tools and resources to transition to your role as lead technician easier. You will have the opportunity to learn tips and tricks for the difficult situations that will inevitably come up in the clinic. The class will also give us all an opportunity to brainstorm the situations we have encountered as technical leads.

This course consists of four (4) ninety (90) minute Real Time Sessions, supplemental library materials, interactive message board discussions, a mandatory end-of-course test, and may include online multiple choice quizzes (after each Real Time Session). Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

Kelly Lynn Cronin is a twenty year veteran of the veterinary field. She holds a Veterinary Technician Specialty in emergency and critical care, a Masters of Business Administration and a Professional in Human Resources Certification. She has had the opportunity to lead a variety of veterinary teams in a variety of clinics from large emergency teams to small day practice teams. She is responsible for setting the pricing structure and monitoring pricing for ten veterinary hospitals, for leading the hospital group in human resources, staffing, budgeting, contracts, inventory and special events. She has consulted on veterinary topics for a variety of hospitals including small animal, mixed practice, specialty and emergency clinics.

Course Outline:
Week 1 (Real Time Session September 10): Rise to Leadership and Your Role
Content: In this first session we will discuss the qualifications of a technician leader, ways to strengthen your resume, how to create authority among previous peers and how to enlist peers in new initiatives as a new leader.

Week 2 (Real Time Session September 17): Creating Your Culture and Your Team
Content: We will be discussing how to choose your culture and how set the culture in place. We will also be discussing what standards will be set in order to achieve the desired culture and how infractions can be handled to preserve the culture.

Week 3 (Real Time Session September 24): Day-to-Day Operations
Content: In this session we will be reviewing scheduling considerations. We will discuss human resource tasks including interviewing, hiring, disciplining, maintaining records, giving feedback and compensation. Budgeting and inventory management will also be covered in this session.

Week 4 (Real Time Session October 1): Keeping Your Team on Track
Content: In this last session we will discuss additional disciplinary matters. We will also cover motivation, setting team assignments, morale and oversight. How to encourage team goals and showing our staff appreciation will also be reviewed in this session.

CE Credits: 6

Tuition: $120 ($108 early bird special if enrolled by August 20, 2015)

* Students currently enrolled in and taking at least 2 classes or 5 units at an AVMA accredited or CAAHT approved Veterinary Technician Program may be eligible to receive a 50% discount off the regular rate for this course (upon verification of student status).

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.
