Level and Prerequisites:
This
basic course is geared toward new and recent grads looking for
practical guidance as they venture forth into the unpredictable world of small animal
general practice. It may also serve as a review for more experienced practitioners or
as an introduction for those transitioning from other practice areas.
There are no prerequisites.

Course Information:
This course is the third of a multiple module series designed to give an
overview of common cases/presentations in small animal day practice.
Different topics will be presented each week, and each discussion will
include highlights on pathophysiology, case presentation, differentials,
diagnostic approach, treatment recommendations, and case examples where
appropriate. Important non-technical skills will also be included.
Week 1 (Real Time Session October 4, 2017):
Fear and Empowerment
Presenter: Susan Cohen

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- become a mentor in the practice.
- better deal with moral dilemmas.
- overcome common fears associated with practice.
Week 2 (Real Time Session October 11, 2017):
Obstacles in Daily Practice
Presenter: Julie Meadows
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- navigate ins and outs of pet insurance and compounding pharmacies.
- write/call in prescriptions.
- taper prednisone.
- monitor chronic medications.
- understand common drug interactions.
- understand the difference between EPA and FDA regulations.
Week 3 (Real Time Session October 18, 2017):
Soft Tissue Surgery and Respiratory Disease

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize and address common respiratory diseases seen in everyday practice.
- give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases.
- develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
- perform common soft tissue surgical procedures.
Week 4 (Real Time Session October 25, 2017):
Common Cases
Presenter: Tom Hansen
Format: Audio
Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- recognize and address common cardiovascular, endocrine, and
neurologic presentations seen in everyday practice.
- Give differentials for common (and uncommon!) cases.
- Develop rational diagnostic and therapeutic treatment plans.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter(s):
Susan Cohen is a Social Worker specializing in the Human-Animal Bond.
She spent 28 years at the Animal Medical Center in New York and now works as a consultant
assisting veterinary practices with issues of communication, stress, and morale.
Julie Meadows graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
in 1988 with a focus in small animal medicine. She entered private practice in California's
Central Valley, where she practiced small animal medicine, surgery and emergency medicine.
After 20 years in private practice, including 10 as a practice owner, she returned to UC
Davis in 2008, where she was Chief of Community Medicine and an assistant professor in
the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology until 2016. She is now back in private
practice in Australia.
Thomas Hansen is a graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine
and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine and Feline
Practice). He is in general and emergency practice in the San Francisco East Bay Area.
His favorite areas of practice are internal medicine, emergency medicine, and ultrasound.
Carl Darby attended Cambridge University School of Veterinary Medicine
and graduated with honors in 1991. After working in private practice, Dr Darby became a
board certified specialist in avian medicine in 2003 and has owned Seneca Falls veterinary
hospital since 2006.
