Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session is up to 1 hour in length. For more information, please visit the CE Practice Area.

*The presenters for this course will be using audio which will require you to have a headset or speakers to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your computer's audio capabilities, please be sure to attend one of the Practice Sessions.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians and veterinary support staff actively interested in setting up or expanding/enhancing an exotic pet practice.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians. Veterinary staff may enroll provided they are associated with an enrolled veterinarian. Veterinary staff need to provide the name of their veterinarian in the comment section during the enrollment process. This course is approved by RACE for veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists. (RACE 22-28049)
This course is approved by VHMA for CVPM credit. (ID: 16-28).

Course Information:
This presentation will explore the reasons for starting an exotic pet practice or adding an exotic component to an existing practice. Whether or not one pursues this journey to completion depends on some soul searching and critical background preparation. There are drugs and various types of equipment unique to exotic pet practice in addition to essential whole hospital staff training. Only after careful preparation, whole hospital commitment to excellence in exotic pet care, staff training and compensation, equipment and drug purchases, etc. should the practice open the door to patients. Internal marketing (in existing practices) and target marketing strategies are essential, along with ways to monitor success and say "thank you" to practice promoters.

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course. About the Presenter:
Dr. Rose Ann Fiskett started Potomac Valley Veterinary Hospital, a successful mixed companion animal practice (dogs, cats, bird, exotic companion mammals, rodents, wildlife) and owned/managed it for 18 years. She has published on efficiency in exotic practice (Veterinary Clinics NA: Exotic Animal Practice). As Program Director for Veterinary Technology she taught Office and Practice Management to veterinary technology students. She was twice invited to lead a roundtable discussion on practice strategies during financially difficult times by the Association of Exotic Mammals at their annual meetings in Milwaukee WI and Savannah GA. Previously on VIN, she taught a course that discussed common equipment used in avian practice and discussion of the economics of avian practice. She has lectured on the role of support staff in successful avian and exotic animal practice at the Wild West Veterinary Conference. In addition, she lectures annually on Avian Welfare at James Madison University. She has lectured on avian topics and exotic mammals and reptiles.

  1. Enrollment qualifications: VIN CE courses are open to VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a VSPN CE or a VIN CE course open to VSPN member enrollment.
  2. Each enrollee must be able to receive emails from @vspn.org and @vin.com addresses. Email is our major form of communication with participants; personal emails are highly recommended rather than clinic/hospital email addresses.
  3. Each person is individually responsible for his/her own registration. To ensure that all information received is secure and correct, please do not enroll for a course on behalf of another individual.

This course has been approved for continual education units toward CVPM requirements through VHMA.
