DATES:

Interactive sessions: Mondays; June 4, 11, 18; 9:30 - 11:30 PM ET (USA)

COURSE OUTLINE:
Week 1 (Lunn): Diagnostic Approach to Vomiting Using a problem-oriented approach we will discuss the localisation of vomiting, focusing on the selection and interpretation of appropriate diagnostic tests. The session will cover both basic and "advanced" testing. We will also consider some of the common and not-so-common clinical manifestations of feline gastrointestinal disease, as they relate to the diagnostic approach to vomiting.

Week 2 (Scherk): Challenging Diseases in Feline Gastroenterology Associated with Vomiting
Topics will include pancreatitis, IBDs, cholangiohepatitis, neoplasia, infectious causes of vomiting as well as non-gastrointestinal causes of vomiting.

Week 3 (Trepanier): Therapeutic Approach to Vomiting Using a case-based approach, we will review commonly used, and newer, drugs in the management of vomiting. Topics to be covered include: What's the best dosing regimen for metoclopramide? What antiemetics are useful in pancreatitis? What's the best H2 blocker? How can sucralfate best be used? What about omeprazole in cats?

At the end of this course, participants will be better able to:

  1. Localize the problem of feline vomiting, generate an appropriate list of differential diagnoses, and understand the application and interpretation of both "basic" and "advanced" diagnostic testing.
  2. Apply both general and specific therapeutic approaches to the problem of vomiting in the cat.
  3. Have an in-depth understanding of a number of complex or challenging feline diseases that lead to vomiting.
