basic course will be open to
veterinarians and veterinary technicians/technologists
actively interested in a review of small rodent medicine.

Course Information:
Small rodents are commonly seen in private practice, and many
veterinarians have a limited working knowledge of this species.
This course is intended to provide an in depth overview of husbandry,
medicine, and common disease presentations by species in order to allow
veterinary staff to feel more comfortable with basic rodent diagnosis
and treatment. Clinical symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and
current considerations for prevention will be covered.
Week 1 (Real Time Session June 29, 2016):
Guinea Pigs

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- educate pet owners on basic husbandry and preventative care
- identify, diagnose, and treat common diseases such as cervical lymphadenitis,
dystocia, ectoparasites, hyperthyroidism, hypovitaminosis C, malocclusion,
ovarian cysts, pneumonia (Bordetella, Streptococcal), pododermatitis,
pregnancy toxemia, trichofolliculomas and urolithiasis
- utilize different sedative options
Week 2 (Real Time Session July 6, 2016):
Chinchillas

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- educate pet owners on basic husbandry and preventative care
- identify, diagnose, and treat common diseases such as enteritis,
fur ring, fur slip, heat stroke, malocclusion, orthopedic injuries,
pneumonia, reproductive disorders and ringworm
- utilize different sedative options
Week 3 (Real Time Session July 13, 2016):
Rats

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- educate pet owners on basic husbandry and preventative care
- identify, diagnose, and treat common diseases such as ectoparasites,
malocclusion, mammary adenoma, pituitary adenoma,
respiratory diseases and urolithiasis
- utilize different sedative options

Week 4 (Real Time Session July 27, 2016):
Mice, Hamsters, Gerbils, Degus, and Wild Rodents

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- educate pet owners on basic husbandry and preventative care for the specific pet species
- identify, diagnose, and treat the most common diseases for each species:
- Mice - dermatological disease, ectoparasites, gastroenteritis,
pneumonia and tumors
- Hamsters - bladder stones, cardiac disease, dermatological disease,
lymphocytic choriomeningitis, proliferative ileitis (wet tail), and tumors
- Gerbils - epilepsy, nasal dermatitis, neoplasia and tail lesions
- Degus - cataracts, dental disease, diabetes and neoplasia
utilize different sedative options for each species
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Sandra Mitchell was one of the first veterinarians to be recognized by the
American Board of Veterinary Medicine as an Exotic Companion Mammal specialist.
She has been treating small companion mammals since her graduation from the
New York State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. Dr. Mitchell is
contacted by veterinarians worldwide to discuss difficult cases. She is
currently the owner of Animal Medical Associates in Saco, Maine; and sees
referrals of rodents and other exotics from all over the northeast.
In addition to her professional interest in rodents, she currently shares her home
with 4 rodents, and has owned every species discussed in this class at one time or another!

VIN member and non-member veterinarians. Veterinarians enrolling in a VSPN CE course
must be a VIN member. Veterinary support staff must be a VSPN member to enroll in a
