and Thursdays, April 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 29 and June 4, 2015; 9:00-10:00 pm ET (USA)

Practice Sessions: In order to prepare you for a successful experience in your CE course, we request you attend a Practice Session prior to the first Real Time Session. Please arrive promptly at the start time; each Practice Session is up to 1 hour in length. For more information, please visit the CE Practice Area.

Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary support staff actively interested in learning how to use Mindfulness in their practices and daily lives.
VIN CE Course: Open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and veterinary support staff. This course is not RACE approved and participants will not receive CE credit. The Veterinary Information Network (VIN) is RACE Provider #22.

Course Description:
Mindfulness meditation is a secular contemplative practice that has been shown to decrease stress, increase empathy, reduce burnout among health care professionals and contribute to a greater sense of well-being. While mindfulness is not a substitute for therapy, it has been used as adjunctive treatment for both depression and anxiety.
This course is designed to introduce mindfulness meditation to the participants and support the individual's personal practice through on-line meetings with like-minded professionals.

It consists of eight (8) one-hour sessions that will include didactic information about mindfulness, a 20-30 minute practice time and end with a question/answer session. Participants will also need to view the pre-recorded lecture in the library prior to attending a meditation session that week.

It is hoped that participants will continue to meet on-line after completion of the series, although this is not a requirement for participation. Ideally, participants should anticipate developing a personal meditation practice of 20-30 minutes most days. This personal practice is critical.

Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to Course Materials: These will be available in the course library prior to each Real Time Session. Headphones will be helpful to time meditation sessions, although audio will be limited. Questions from participants and answers will be typed (as is done in VIN Rounds).

About the Instructor:
Michele Gaspar is a VIN consultant (Feline Internal Medicine Folder) and holds a Master's in pastoral counseling from Loyola University/Chicago. She is a licensed professional counselor and is currently enrolled in the adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy program of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. Michele has had a personal mindfulness meditation practice for 13 years and completed the certificate program in Mindfulness and Psychotherapy from the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy in Newton, MA. She is a member of Ancient Dragon Gate Zen Center in Chicago. Michele is currently completing the two-year certificate program in adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy through the Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis and is a part-time staff therapist at the C.G Jung Center in Evanston, IL. Her interests include the use of meditation as an antidote to professional burnout, compassion fatigue and stress. Michele has lectured on mindfulness meditation to veterinarians, veterinary support staff and shelter personnel.

Course Outline:

Week 1 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday April 12 and Thursday April 16)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 4/12 or 4/16 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 1 Video" located in the course library.
Content: Body scan and mindfulness meditation session/questions and comments regarding technique.

Week 2 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday April 19 and Thursday April 23)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 4/19 or 4/23 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 2 Video" located in the course library.
Content: Review of the neurobiological research on mindfulness and a review of several of the large-scale studies on the technique among health care providers and students. Meditation session/questions and comments regarding technique.

Week 3 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday April 26 and Thursday April 30)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 4/26 or 4/30 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 3 Video" located in the course library.
Content: Empathy, Compassion, and Sympathy: What do they really mean? Meditation session/question and comments regarding technique.

Week 4 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday May 3 and Thursday May 7)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 5/3 or 5/7 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 4 Video" located in the course library.
Content: Dealing with difficult people. How does mindfulness help? Meditation session/questions and comments regarding technique.

Week 5 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday May 10 and Thursday May 14)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 5/10 or 5/14 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 5 Video" located in the course library.
Content: Using mindfulness to deal with staff issues. Meditation session/questions and comments regarding technique.

Week 6 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday May 17 and Thursday May 21)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 5/17 or 5/21 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 6 Video" located in the course library.
Content: Guest speaker. Meditation session/questions and comments regarding technique.

Week 7 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday May 24 and Thursday May 28)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 5/24 or 5/28 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 7 Video" located in the course library.
Content: Dealing with roadblocks to practice. How does one sustain mindfulness practice? Meditation session/question and comments regarding technique.

Week 8 (Real Time Sessions - Sunday May 31 and Thursday June 4)
Required Viewing (prior to attending the 5/31 or 6/4 Real Time Session): Watch the "Week 8 Video" located in the course library.
Content: A summary of where we have been? Planning the sustainability of this practice for ourselves.
