picture of veterinary studentThere are 27 schools of veterinary medicine in the United States. Each has unique requirements for admission, however most students complete 4 years of pre-professional work at any accredited college or university. In addition, applicants must take qualifying exams such as the GRE (Graduate Record Examination), MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), or VCAT (Veterinary College Admission Test). Also required is some level of experience in the field, either working for veterinarians, conducting research, working with wildlife etc.

Veterinary School Admissions Information:

In 1994, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and the Educational Testing Service collaborated and implemented the Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS@aavmc.org), designed to centralize veterinary school applications. Currently 23 of the 27 veterinary schools participate in this program. The VMCAS web site provides some excellent information about pre-veterinary education and preparation, financial aid information, recent applicant statistics and which standardized tests are required by schools. The service also publishes a handbook entitled, "Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements in the United States and Canada" (Purdue University Press, 1532 South Campus Courts-E, West Lafayette, IN 47907-1532, 800-933-9637).
