Deck The Halls With (Pet Safe!) Boughs of Holly
Help your clients avoid a trip to the emergency clinic this holiday season with these handy resources:

Need help explaining to your clients just how toxic their favorite holiday foliage might be? Find out which plants are unsafe to have around their furry friends with the Household Poisonous Plant Book -- compiled by our friends at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center!

Cookies and Candies and Cakes! Oh My!
This time of year, owners want to include their pets in the fun by giving them extra special treats. Many of these treats may be very dangerous or toxic to pets. The Medical FAQ on Dangerous Foods will help you educate your staff and clients about potential problems associated with feeding pets certain foods and what to do when it happens.

Use these resources to brush up on your knowledge and help educate your clients on the dangers of chocolate and other candies:

A case-based review of a simplified quantitative approach to acid-base analysis
This quantitative approach identifies many of the relevant contributors to the metabolic acid-base component. This calculation is more meaningful than anion gap because it takes into consideration more of the identifiable factors.

Preliminary validation of a point-of-care ethylene glycol test for cats
The ethylene glycol (EG) test examined in this study produced a large number of false negatives and false positives at various EG concentrations.

Toxic effects of cyclonite (C-4) plastic explosive ingestion in a dog
Would anyone be surprised to find out that this dog was a Labrador?

The role of insulin in endocrinopathic laminitis
The common link in endocrinopathic laminitis is insulin resistance, which is manifest as hyperinsulinemia in horses, most commonly with euglycemia.

Kerion ringworm
Am I jumping the gun on systemic mycosis? I had the owner's son in tears when he picked the dog up, which was totally not my intention. But I don't want to be the guy who missed a Blasto case when it was staring me in the face. Anything else I should be looking at???

Socialization tips
Do keep in mind that learning is often contextual-the animal learns something within the context where it is taught. So, socializing puppies in your rescue area, may not prepare them for what they would find in a family home. Therefore, they should also, if possible be exposed to home type things, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, doorbells, stairs, waste cans etc.

Digital ultrasound considerations for a new emergency/referral hospital
For an ER practice, the CD is almost like the surgical closure. It is part of the ER "goody bag" and the only thing that vets might see from you. Be sure to print up nice CD covers with instructions on how to use the DVD (many are *not* intuitive) and make a marketing piece out of it.

Old woman wants her dog certified as a service dog: what should I do?
My heart goes out to elderly ladies who want to keep their cocker spaniels, and I encourage those associated with them to work toward Emotional Support Dog status where appropriate. That is valid and may be the most appropriate for this situation.

    Search Tip:
Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search:
    - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search.
    - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.

    Funny Bones:
"My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said,'I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 200 in about 3 seconds.'I bought her a scale. Then the fight started..."
