You Can Make a Difference: Participate in Veterinary Research
Between the demands of practice and personal life, your precious free time (if you have any) is probably limited. Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office? Simply visit the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page to find a study recruiting patients. Be a part of the solution. Help lead the way in answering questions that matter. If you have a patient who fits the criteria for any of the clinical trials listed, click the link to see how to enroll. Check the clinical trials page to see if one of the other ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients. In case you were unable to attend... Browse the ACVIM 2008 proceedings online by speaker/category or search by topic. Plan to attend the 2009 Forum in Montreal. Book your hotel early; space is filling up fast.

Stalking stones: An overview of canine and feline urolithiasis
Submitting or saving a recovered urolith, including the nidus, for bacterial culture is recommended in cases in which results of a urine culture are negative or pending, especially in dogs suspected of having struvite uroliths.
Tetanus in equids: A review of 76 cases
Currently, lower doses [of tetanus antitoxin] are recommended, from 5,000 to 50,000 IU, because TAT intravenously, intramuscularly, or subcutaneously does not cross the hematoencephalic barrier and effects only a circulating toxin that has not linked to nervous system receptors.
Why the physical exam is still really necessary
As Sir William Osler said, “Learn to see, learn to hear, learn to feel, learn to smell and know that by practice alone can you become experts.”

Cat illnesses: Orijen feed implicated
Unexplained chronic illness and death among Sydney cats has been linked to a gourmet imported pet food withdrawn from stores over the past three weeks. A cat neurologist, Georgina Child, has put down five cats over the past week and treated or consulted with other vets about more than a dozen others suffering from paralysis.
How can I improve business?
Cut back on hours of operation, decrease staff to allow minimal coverage only. Look objectively at the employees with the highest salaries... are they producing at the level equal to their pay? If not- keep them on and make them take up the slack for some of the staff you've let go, or let them go and distribute their duties to lower-paid employees.
Dealing with clients who use emotional blackmail in an attempt to get free services
I simply tell them that it is not *us* to whom the money is the issue. We would gladly provide care for their pet when they decide that it is more about the care than the money.
German shorthair puppy with one foreleg much smaller than the other
My guess would be that this is a congenital deformity, since I would expect a birthing trauma to affect one particular area of the limb, not to cause a uniformly smaller leg. Looks like you have a publishable case report on your hands.

Get More From VIN Search Tip: Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search: - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search. - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful. For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.
