New Unity Conferencing System
Introducing VIN’s new Unity Conferencing System. It’s cool, it’s hip, it’s yours! It works with a PC; it works with a MAC. There is no installation needed -- a very short automated browser update may be required for a few VINners. Be the first to see, use and test the new Unity before everybody else! Join Paul and all your VIN friends and colleagues in a spirited Town Hall Meeting this coming Tuesday, December 16th at 7:00 pm ET. Final release of version 1.0 of the new Unity is planned for late January 2004. Help us test the system while we discuss how to make VIN and the VIN community do more for you. Click here to test the new Unity. What plants are poisonous in the home? Not sure? Have a need to know? Then take a look at VIN's Household Poisonous Plant Book!

Trends in fluoroquinolone resistance of bacteria isolated from canine urinary tracts
Although the overall efficacy of fluoroquinolone antimicrobials remained high with greater than 80% of isolates being susceptible, the data demonstrated an increase in the proportion of resistant bacteria isolated from the urinary tract of the dog.
Canine visceral leishmaniasis and its emergence in the United States
Leishmaniasis is an important zoonotic disease that accounts for approximately 57,000 deaths among people each year. Dogs are reservoirs for the disease, and dog ownership is a risk factor in endemic areas.
American canine hepatozoonosis
Hepatozoon americanum infection is an emerging tickborne disease in the southern United States. This organism causes a very different and much more severe disease than does Hepatozoon canis, the etiologic agent of canine hepatozoonosis in the rest of the world. H americanum is transmitted through ingestion of the definitive host, Amblyomma maculatum (the Gulf Coast tick).
Ehrlichiosis and related infections
A recent reclassification has resulted in the transfer of several species previously known as Ehrlichia to the genus Anaplasma or Neorickettsia. Ehrlichia and Anaplasma are transmitted largely through the bite of infected ticks, while vectors for Neorickettsia include trematodes and the intermediate hosts (i.e., fish, snails, and insects) involved in the trematode life cycle.

Fluoride Gel In Cats: Isn't Fluoride Toxic To Pets?
I recently "inherited" a client who is using 0.4% stannous fluoride gel daily in her cat for gingivitis. I was under the impression that we did not use human toothpastes in pets because of the fluoride and possibility of toxicity.
Charging An 'Urgent Care Fee' When You're Already Booked?
I have talked with other area clinics and 1 of them adds an "urgent care" fee to the bill. We tried that. I'm uncomfortable with it. I personally think as a consumer that it sounds like, "We'll see your sick pet same day--for more money."
Veterinary Lawsuits And The State Board's Responsibility
Can't the various boards of veterinary medicine be sued for not establishing and ENFORCING effective standards of practice and continuing education?...such lawsuits would not be hugely profitable, but they would force state boards to provide a true service to the public, and true oversight and guidance to veterinary licensees.
Rodenticide Ingestion, Goats
Get a baseline PT and PPT, because these are highly variable among ruminants, and there are no established normals. If you see prolongation from baseline, or clinical bleeds, then give 1 mg/kg of menadione (K1).
