COMMUNICATION Is What VIN Is All About!
Abbreviations speed up communication amongst colleagues who know each other, but they sure can slow you down when you don't understand what a specific abbreviation means.

We will never stop the use of abbreviations, so the VIN community has compiled some of the most commonly used abbreviations. If you'd like to contribute one or more of your own, send an e-mail to Becky@vin.com with your suggestions.

Don't Let Fleas (or Flea Product Choices) Bug You!
VIN Consultants Mark Grossman, DVM MS and Carol Foil, MS DVM DACVD have organized a chart of Ethical and Prescription Flea Products to help VINners make sense of the plethora of products. Print a copy and keep dosages, patient notes, clinical effects and mechanisms of action at your fingertips. Join the message board discussion to share your thoughts and give your feedback/suggestions!

Stem cells in veterinary medicine--attempts at regenerating equine tendon after injury
This review focuses on the current use of stem cells in clinical cases, primarily to treat strain-induced tendon injury in the horse. The background on why this treatment has been advocated, the data supporting its use, and the current encouraging outcome from clinical use in horses treated with bone-marrow-derived stem cells are presented, along with the future challenges of stem-cell therapy for the veterinary community.

Efficacy of temozolomide or dacarbazine in combination with an anthracycline for rescue chemotherapy in dogs with lymphoma
Both combinations had promise in the treatment of dogs with relapsed or refractory lymphoma, although administration of temozolomide was more convenient than administration of dacarbazine and caused fewer hematologic toxicoses.

Plasma concentrations of voriconazole in falcons
Doses of 12.5 mg voriconazole/kg bodyweight administered every 12 hours by crop gavage to six falcons for 14 days provided peak plasma concentrations of more than 1 mug/ml, but the trough concentrations were lower and sometimes undetectable. Administering the same doses incorporated into meat that was fed to one falcon for seven days, and to three falcons for up to 91 days, provided similar plasma concentrations.

Is this Myasthenia Gravis?
Crazy is a 4 year old intact male pit bull...not on HWP and owner's "worm". They called because he was vomiting and couldn't seem to keep anything down. When we saw him - he was thin - but 71 pounds non the less [sic] - up from when I saw him 2 years ago- and panting and trembling in the rear.

Disposal of controlled substances
The best way is to use a reverse distributor. Reverse distributors will take your controlled substances and attempt to return them to the manufacturer for credit (and you get a slice of any credit - the amount depends on what kind of deal they make with you). Any that are not accepted for credit they dispose of.

Non-steroidal anti-Inflammatory drugs contributed to this dog's death through intestinal perforations
I wanted to let everyone know that we have to be highly suspicious as we use these drugs. I think we jump to them quickly, and in many cases justifiably so, as they have been a real boon to our patients' comfort. However, a case like this will pop up on occasion and we must be ready for it.
