  • The Survey Says...
Just how bad is it getting out there? 470 VINners took the Economic Impact Survey, many of them providing real data to help lend some insight into just how bad (or not) the situation is. The conclusion? It's not great, but it could be worse. Check out the survey results and draw your own conclusion. Please don't hesitate to share your thoughts, even if you didn't participate in the survey.

A few more VINners (3471 total!) completed the Veterinary Wage and Benefit survey. The results show that gross income of the participants' practices is fairly evenly distributed over all the categories. Feel free to add your 'two cents' to the discussion!

Cramming For Exams or Need a Quick Refresher?
The Student Center Has The Tools!

Don't know what cytokines do? Unsure what TNF stands for? You can find quick references for these terms and many others in the Clinical Pathology and Immunology section of the VIN Student Center.

Use MyToolbox to get help, search the VIN Library or open the VINdex menu.

Thanks to the continuous efforts of the VIN community, the Student Center has grown into a resource to serve all VINners.

E-mail to Feedback@vin.com if you'd like to contribute to the Student Center and and don't forget to share your VIN experience on your school message boards.

Outbreak of canine distemper in domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo)
In 2006, an outbreak of canine distemper affected 14 young domestic ferrets in Barcelona, Spain. Their clinical signs included a reduced appetite, lethargy, dyspnoea, coughing, sneezing, mucopurulent ocular and nasal discharges, facial and perineal dermatitis, diarrhoea, splenomegaly and fever. Late in the course of the disease, general desquamation and pruritus, and hyperkeratotic/crusting dermatitis of the lips, eyes, nose, footpads, and perineal area were observed. None of the ferrets developed neurological signs.

Ganglioneuroma of the brachial plexus in two cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus)
Ganglioneuroma involving the brachial plexus, paraspinal ganglia, and cervical-thoracic spinal cord was diagnosed in 2 adult cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus). Both birds had a chronic 1-year history of ataxia and perching difficulty.

Expanding families: preparing for and introducing dogs and cats to infants, children, and new pets
Once clients make a decision to expand their family with children or pets, veterinarians can be instrumental in providing education and support to make the additions successful. Veterinarians should remind clients to make changes in the household well in advance of the new addition's arrival, to be patient, to make all introductions safe and controlled, and to reward good behavior.

    Novel homemade diet challenge
I was very apprehensive about the 2-3 months of just meat recommendation, but 3 separate dermatologists told me it was too short a time to cause any problems. I wondered if a nutritionist would agree!! They said to start with just meat and not even add in the Balance It to keep it a strict trial. In all honesty though, this is just not working.

    Autoclave sterilization check
These are biological indicators that should be standard practice for any clinic that has an autoclave. They are required regularly (once to twice weekly, or more often, depending on jurisdiction) in most areas in human medicine. They are bacterial spores that you put through an autoclave run. They are then sent for culture.

Memorializing Roger Gfeller: International Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society (IVECCS) 2008 meeting
I think it is great that we were able to honor Roger with the tournament and the scholarship.

Helping clients gather and accept credible veterinary health care information from the internet
After seeing clients abandon our recommendations for information they found on the Internet, I decided to write something for clients about how to research the web and what sites to trust.

    "How to Use VIN" resources:
The three-part "How To Use VIN" course can be taken live (on the first three Wednesday nights of each month), or you can do it as self study.

To keep up with VIN's growth, take the time to explore the Front Page at least once a week, read the VIN This Week (VINTW) newsletter twice a week, explore the VINDEX (VIN's Front Page, right hand column), and click all the buttons on VIN's navigation bars.

    Funny Bones:
    Climate Crisis
"I often astonish my Hawaiian in-laws by wandering around (gasp) in 50 degree weather in shorts and a t-shirt. When they were here last September (lovely mid-50's to mid-60's) Joan and Tony were in long pants, sweaters, and heavy jackets."
