The thrill of victory! The agony of defeat!
Ah, yes, we well remember test days in vet school. ;-) Want to relive those days? Check out this week's VIN Query and see how you do! A link to the query is also available from VIN's Front Page. And if you still have brain cells left after that one, share your experience and opinion with other VINners via.... Survey of the Week #3

Plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotrophic hormone and alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone in ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) with hyperadrenocorticism
The findings suggest that hyperadrenocorticism in ferrets is an ACTH and alpha-MSH-independent condition.
Histopathologic effects of the single intramuscular injection of ketamine, atropine and midazolam in a rat model
There was histologic evidence that ketamine, atropine and midazolam combination may lead to long-lasting, degenerative changes at the site of the IM injection.
Changes in concentrations of neuroendocrine hormones and catecholamines in dogs with myocardial failure induced by rapid ventricular pacing.
Dogs subjected to ventricular pacing for 9 weeks developed neuroendocrine responses similar to those that develop in humans with more chronic heart failure.

Rattlesnake Antivenin and Preplanning for Being Bitten
He should contact his local hospital, let the emergency room know what he has, and enquire about their snakebite protocol. My guess is that they don't have a protocol and that none of the physicians there has ever treated a case of snakebite. When he's in the hospital trying to die, it's a little late for them to start looking into it. Here's a photo of an actual Eastern Diamondback bite in which just one fang merely grazed the victim's hand...
Ovuplant, Estrus Induction
Just had a very interesting conversation with Dr. Michelle Kutzler at Cornell University. She has been 100% successful in inducing estrus using the implant. She stresses that this is a research project and not approved for use in dogs. Ovuplant is a GnRH analogue.

Intermediate Wildlife Medicine
* Are you presented with wildlife cases on a regular basis? * Do you think you are "kind of" familiar with the ethical and legal problems of treating wildlife, but you want to know more? * Have you figured out that you really need more medical knowledge to properly care for injured wild animals? (Remember: It's not what you don't know that will get you, it's what you think you know - but don't!) VIN CE can help! VIN's Intermediate Wildlife Medicine CE course is structured for practitioners who are presented with wildlife cases on a regular basis and assumes the practitioner is familiar with the basic principles of avian medicine and surgery. Topics will include: ethical and legal considerations; handling, restraint, and examination; zoonoses and other public health concerns; and triage and treatment of common presentations. Instructor: Sonia Hernandez-Divers, DVM, DACZM Dates: Nov 25 - Dec 23, 2002
