  • The Winn Feline Foundation Library on VIN
The Winn Feline Foundation Library contains educational material, research reports and grant information.

The Winn Feline Foundation was established by the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA, www.cfainc.org) in 1968 to create a source of funding for medical studies to improve the health and well-being of cats. The Foundation was named to honor CFA's long-time attorney and advisor, Robert H. Winn and is a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status. Since its inception, over $2.5 million in grants have been awarded by Winn. Over the years, Winn grants have helped advance veterinary knowledge in all areas of feline health.

    Anatomy of a recall
A recent new federal law will require the FDA to improve its abilities to detect outbreaks of pet food-borne illness, respond to a contamination incident, and communicate with industry and the public on the matter of recalls. Veterinarians play a key role in detecting and reporting pet food-borne illness.

A note on the effectiveness of behavioural rehabilitation for reducing inter-dog aggression in shelter dogs
The study shows short-term reduction of inter-dog aggression through rehabilitation, but further work is needed on effective ways of maintaining the behavioural change.

    Pet food safety: dietary protein
In older dogs, protein requirements increase by about 50%, while their energy requirements tend to decrease. When insufficient protein is provided, it can aggravate the age-associated loss of lean body mass and may contribute to earlier mortality. Older dogs should receive at least 25% of their calories from protein, typically provided by diets containing at least 7 g protein/100 Kcal metabolizable energy.

2007 Pet food recall settlement: file now!
Owners of pets in the United States sickened or killed by pet food contaminated with melamine have until Nov. 24 to submit claims under a court settlement approved this week. The defendants, including Menu Foods, Nestle Purina PetCare Co., Wal-Mart, PETCO and others, have created a $24-million fund from which eligible consumers and/or pet owners may receive potentially 100 percent compensation for their documented economic damages.

    How do you cut costs?
Saving money has been hard. We now have money out of each check direct deposited on payday to a bank we don’t use often and don’t have a teller card to. This is so simple but yet works for me.

    Veterinary medicine's future: limited licensure?
Yes, it is true that there are more small animal than large/mixed animal colleagues in the VIN community. But that is not due to design. It is who "moved into the neighborhood". The door is open. The large animal/mixed population is growing. Like everything in the VIN community, it grows when it is championed.

Anticoagulant rodenticide toxicosis: should we immediately start vitamin K therapy or just monitor clotting times?
I called a human poison control today and was told that prophylactic vitamin K1 supplementation, in cases of anticoagulant rodenticide ingestion in humans, is no longer recommended. Is this just a human medicine thing, or have I missed something?
