We're excited by the opportunities to share knowledge and support that Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., will bring to the VIN community. Please take a moment to welcome our newest addition to the Vet Industry message board. Remember to post your questions about the company's services. (While you're in the industry folders, check out all of the other companies that are willing and able to answer your product questions!) A Note From Paul About Industry on VIN: As a result of the recent rapid rise in the number of industry folders on VIN, a few have written to ask if VIN has changed its position regarding independence from industry. Rest assured that nothing has changed. VIN remains committed to the VIN Policies on Commercialism. We all benefit from increased communication and access between colleagues in practice, academia, and industry. Facilitating this communication is our goal. We are pleased that more of our colleagues in industry are recognizing this and joining the discussion.

Feline Zoonoses Guidelines from the American Association of Feline Practitioners
In a recent study, responses of veterinarians and physicians varied dramatically when queried about zoonoses. Most physicians did not feel comfortable counseling clients about zoonoses and felt that veterinarians should provide information for patients and physicians.
Feline Pyothorax: A Retrospective Study of 27 Cases in Australia
Pyothorax was diagnosed in 27 cats between 1983 and 2002. In 21 (78%) of the cases, pleural fluid culture and/or cytology was consistent with a mixed anaerobic bacterial infection of oropharyngeal origin. In six cases (22%), infection was caused by unusual pathogens or pathogens of non-oropharyngeal origin. The overall mortality rate was 22%. Treatment was successful in 18 of 19 cases (95%) where closed thoracostomy tubes were inserted.
Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability of Healthy Cats in Home and Hospital Environments
Sinus arrhythmia was often observed in resting cats. Heart rates (bpm) were: 187 (± 25) when restrained, 150 (± 23) using telemetry in a quiet hospital room, and 132 (± 19) in the owner's home. Each of these rates was significantly different from the others. Significant differences in profiles of HR variability suggested that sympathetic tone was higher (and parasympathetic tone lower) when cats were in the hospital.
Chemotherapy Dose Calculation and Administration in Exotic Animal Species
Specific dosing requirements would be largely determined by the sensitivity of the tumor to the chemotherapy agent and by its toxicity, rather than any large-scale dosage alterations driven by significant pharmacokinetic differences.

Is Simplicef Effective For Pyoderma?
I can tell you that we have been using Simplicef at 10mg/kg once daily for min 3 weeks and so far have been pleased with the response. Certainly it improves owner compliance, which is always an issue with weeks of antibiotics.
Steroid Alternatives To Use In Cats With Presumptive IBD; Discussion Of Intestinal Biopsy Options
Granted, there's little consensus in reading intestinal biopsies in our patients at present (this should be rectified when the ACVIM panel makes its recommendations, probably next year at the ACVIM Forum). However, I consider small cell LSA to be a mucosal disease and I believe that well-retrieved, good quality intestinal biopsies collected with an endoscope can give a good diagnosis in the majority of patients. I typically ultrasound before deciding whether endoscopy or exploratory is the best choice for the patient. I had a recent case of jejunal eosinophilic disease (diagnosed after ex-lap) that would have revealed no changes endoscopically, I am sure. Jejunal thickening prompted my recommendation for ex-lap in this patient.
