Are You New To Posting On VIN? It's easy!
You've done a VIN Search and didn't find quite what you need to know. Now what? Post your question on the VIN Message Boards and get the input of your fellow VINners, including those extra special VINners, the VIN Consultants. To get the quickest response, be sure to post in the most specific folder. For example, one of the busiest folders on VIN is Internal Medicine. If you have a problem diabetic, try posting in the Endocrinology folder. If you have a painful Dachshund, post in the Neurology folder. Posting in the most specific folder directs your question to the VINners most interested in your particular concern. If you've never posted, there are plenty of resources to make you a 'posting pro' in no time. - The How To course meets the first 3 Wednesdays of every month. Week 2 focuses on the VIN Message Boards. If you don't have time to attend the live sessions, there is a self-study option.
- The Message Board FAQs are a quick reference to the basic (How can I find my post to check for replies?) and more advanced (How can I get input from people in multiple folders?) features of the Message Boards.
- Kim Schiller's rounds on How to Get the Most from Your Posts.
The next time you need help with a challenging case or just want to share a laugh, post to the VIN Message Boards and connect with your fellow VINners! Need Help? Having trouble logging in to VIN? Questions about your membership? Can't find that reference you need for a tough case? Help is a click, email or phone call away! (Hint: you can find this page anytime by clicking HELP on the main VIN Navigation Bar).

Efficacy and tolerability of once-daily cephalexin in canine superficial pyoderma: an open controlled study
The aims of this study were to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of oral cephalexin given at 30 mg/kg once daily in dogs with superficial pyoderma and to compare them with those of oral cephalexin given at 15 mg/kg twice daily. Resolution of superficial pyoderma was obtained in all dogs in 14 to 42 days (median 28 days for both groups), with no difference between groups.
The occurrence and anti-microbial susceptibility of salmonellae isolated from commercially available pig ear pet treats
An overall prevalence of 4% was observed, with isolates exhibiting resistance to up to seven anti-microbials. Although the prevalence observed during this study is lower than the prevalence observed in 1999, pig ear treats should still be considered as a possible source of Salmonella and anti-microbial resistant bacteria to humans and dogs in Canada.
Treatment of 46 cats with porcine lente insulin - a prospective, multicentre study
Insulin treatment was started at a dose rate of 0.25-0.5IU/kg body weight twice daily, with a maximum starting dose of 2IU/injection. Twenty-eight of the cats were classed as reaching clinical stability during the study. In 23 of these cats, this was during the stabilization phase.
Serological survey for antibodies to leptospira in dogs and raccoons in Washington state
The most frequently detected serovars in healthy dogs were autumnalis, icterohemorrhagiae, and canicola. In clinical canine samples, autumnalis, bratislava, and pomona were more frequent. In sick or injured raccoons, autumnalis and pomona were most frequently detected.

Is the economy hindering practice sales?
Doyle Watson, DVM, says that the banks are still making money available for veterinary practice purchases because the business is historically a good risk for bankers. Veterinary practices traditionally only default on their loans one time out of one hundred. And, it appears that so far most practices are weathering the downturn. Related VNS story.
The economic blues
In 25 years in this industry, I have NEVER SEEN so many bad signs in our economy all at once. (And I was working during the 1990 – 1991 recession.) But here is my suggestion, be cautious with your spending. If I am right, your profits won’t suffer as much, if I am wrong you will just end up making more money.
Urine marking in cats: treatment suggestions
My experience is that there seem to be two broad classes of urine marking cats. There are the "low men on the totem pole" types who always look a little anxious about things. It's easy to understand that these guys spray. But there are also the cats who seem pretty confident and comfortable with life. These guys are a little harder to understand, but keep in mind that urine marking is a normal feline behavior.
Feeling rushed for procedures: how to effectively schedule dentistry procedures
My suggestion, having gone through this at two practices, is that no "dental" is to be scheduled unless a veterinarian has evaluated the mouth and given the client an estimate ...

Member Benefit: The VIN Bookstore is better than ever! During the past year, visibility and promotion of the VIN Bookstore as a VIN member benefit was greatly reduced. Why? Because despite the savings available, long delivery times diminished the 'benefit'. We are happy to report that those issues have been resolved...and that once again the VIN Bookstore is truly a member benefit. VIN Members save 10% or more off the list price every day and free shipping on US orders of $90.00 or more. Please tell us what you think.
