VINning from Scratch
Whether you're having trouble finding your way around VIN or you've found a rare free minute to browse, the VIN Front Page is the place to start!

Check out the Daily Pearl on the left side of the page for breaking news, new Online Proceedings and links to bios for your favorite VIN Consultants and Reps.

On the right side, you'll find links to some of the most popular features such as Dx Challenges, the Abstract of the Week and Recent Rounds, to name just a few. See all of the possible VIN destinations in the VINDEX drop down menu!

The Clinical Updates in the center of the page change every day and keep you in touch with helpful information from recent journal abstracts and relevant archived message board discussions.

Cognitive dysfunction and the neurobiology of ageing in cats
Studies have revealed a number of changes in the brains of geriatric cats that showed signs of cognitive dysfunction. Potential causes include vascular insufficiency leading to hypoxia, increased free radical damage, and the deposition of beta-amyloid plaques and/or the modification of other proteins.

Traumatic brain injury in horses: 34 cases (1994-2004)
Horses with basilar bone fractures were 7.5 times as likely not to survive as horses without this type of fracture. Depending on clinical signs, horses received supportive care, osmotic or diuretic treatments, antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics, or anticonvulsants. Twenty-one (62%) horses survived to discharge from the hospital. Risk factors associated with nonsurvival included recumbency of more than 4 hours duration after initial evaluation (odds ratio, 18) and fracture of the basilar bone (odds ratio, 7.5).
