Trick or Treat or a Trip to the ER?
Halloween is here! This time of year, owners want to include their pets in the fun by giving them extra special treats. Many of these treats may be very dangerous or toxic to pets. The Medical FAQ on Dangerous Foods will help you educate your staff and clients about potential problems associated with feeding pets certain foods and what to do when it happens. Use these resources to brush up on your knowledge and help educate your clients on the dangers of chocolate and other candies:

Iodine-based contrast media in avian medicine
This article summarizes the use of water-soluble, iodine-based contrast media in avian patients with an emphasis in the examination of the urinary tract, the nasal cavity and sinuses, the cardiovascular system, and the spinal cord.
Clinical technique: peritoneal dialysis and percutaneous peritoneal dialysis catheter placement in small mammals
Percutaneous placement with a modified Seldinger technique is described in a step-by-step guide in this article because of the advantages of placement without surgery, and the decreased risk of causing damage to underlying viscera versus a trochar technique.
Recurrent single oesophageal stricture treated with a self-expanding stent in a cat
Twelve months post-implantation, the cat was no longer able to eat even liquid food and the owner opted for euthanasia. On post-mortem examination, the stent surfaces were overgrown by oesophageal mucosa by approximately 50%.
Glucose lowering effects of inhaled insulin in healthy cats
Five adult cats were administered aerosolized 0.9% saline (IS), regular insulin intravenously (IV) 0.5U/kg, and aerosolized regular insulin 15U/kg (I15) and 25U/kg (I25) and blood glucose was evaluated. Mean blood glucose was significantly lower at 15, 30, and 45 minutes in the I25 and IV groups compared to baseline. Results of this study demonstrate that aerosolized insulin can effectively lower blood glucose concentrations in healthy cats.

Do you do a meniscal release?
It all depends on which devil you want to dance with: potentially inducing morbidity/pathology in dogs that were destined to be OK vs. having a variable percentage of dogs that require a second operation for a late meniscal tear.
Hepatic lipidosis: is actigal contraindicated?
I have seen very different doses in the literature. I have only a vaque idea regarding why I need vitamin B, just that these patients use alot of vitamin B and additional vit B they'll urinate out. Can you tell me why, which and what doses I should consider?
Dangerous dog law: if the dog is black and tan ...
Has the municipality ever heard of Gordon Setters? Black and tan coonhounds? Black and tan cocker spaniels? Black and tan chihuahuas, miniature pinschers, and a dozen other dogs who normally have black and tan coats?
Conflicting reports on coronavirus mutation to FIP virus and value of FIP vaccine: what's the bottom line?
The point is still whether the FIP vaccine is protective. The vaccine does not prevent acquistion of feline coronavirus in the cat, and any cat with FCoV has the potential to develop FIP. For my money, that's the bottom line.

VIN Members save 10% or more off the list price every day and free shipping on US orders of $90.00 or more. Please tell us what you think.
