New Online Book: Citing Medicine
The National Library of Medicine has released the newest version of Citing Medicine, The NLM Style Guide for Authors, Editors, and Publishers and it's available in the VIN Library.

The new NLM guide now includes instructions on citing wikis and blogs. For even more information on citing digital information, check out the Citing Digital Information FAQ.

Remember the Declaws?
Eighteen months ago, VINners were invited to participate in a Declawing Survey and the response was phenomenal. Unforeseen circumstances prevented release of the data - until now! Take a look at the preliminary survey analysis for the Declawing Survey.

If you participated in another survey and haven't seen the results, check the Survey Results in the Archive section of the Library.

Etiopathologic findings of canine hypothyroidism
Serum antibodies against thyroid components are common in thyroid pathologic conditions and dysfunction, and understanding their properties and frequency is important in the interpretation of thyroid diagnostic test results.

Thyroid surgery in dogs and cats
Thyroid surgery is indicated for malignant and benign neoplasms or hyperplasia of the thyroid glands. A ventral midline cervical approach allows for bilateral thyroid exploration. Evaluation of both thyroids should be done before proceeding with partial or complete thyroidectomy.

Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome: Prevalence, clinical signs and treatment with a neuroprotective nutraceutical
Eight dogs affected by Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) were enrolled in an open-label clinical pilot trial with the neuroprotective nutraceutical Senilife (r). Senilife (r) contains 25 mg phosphatidylserine, 50 mg of standardized Ginkgo biloba extract, 33.5 mg/d-alpha tocopherol, and 20.5 mg pyridoxine per capsule and is dosed at one capsule per 5 kg body weight.

California wildfires
Anyone know what's going on with the Wild Animal Park? My friend Kellie in San Diego said that some of the educational animals had been evacuated into the park's Hospital, with the thinking being that the hospital is in a relatively protected area, but that the majority of the animals are out in their fields, which have been heavily watered, but are considered at risk. I can't imagine how they would even attempt to evacuate a place like that.

Expand practice from small animal to mixed?
I opened a small animal vet clinic in a small town/rural area. There is a need for me to see large animals, but I haven't done much large animal work. Would there be someone to refer me to that could recd how to feel up to date and confident with large animal medicine. Reference materials, CE courses, etc?

Routine use of L-Lysine in animal ahelters; economical sources of bulk Lysine
Many shelters do use lysine routinely. There are many ways to purchase lysine that are relatively economical. It comes bulk in a powdered form, which is easily administered to cats by mixing into canned food.

Major surgeries in extremely fractious cats
We keep them in a very quiet room and keep an intravenous (IV) catheter in and fluids running. When we need to do anything we use microdoses of Domitor IV to handle the animal. We give as many drugs IV as we can (avoiding those that go intramuscularly or orally). If we have to do this for a week, we will, but most only need to be here a few days depending on the surgery.
