Sunday Rounds Open to VIN & VSPN Members
To wrap up Veterinary Technician Week, Sunday Rounds is a special session open to both VIN and VSPN members. So gather up your staff, get them registered for VSPN and join us for What You Need To Know About Legislation And Veterinary Technicians. NOTE: Staff members should register early for VSPN to be welcomed in time for the session! VINners use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. VSPNners use the link on the VSPN Main Page. If you can't attend, be sure to check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN or next Tuesday's VIN This Week for links to the transcript of the discussion. To find out what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.
Remember the Declaws?
Eighteen months ago, VINners were invited to participate in a Declawing Survey and the response was phenomenal. Unforeseen circumstances prevented release of the data - until now! Take a look at the preliminary survey analysis for the Declawing Survey. If you participated in another survey and haven't seen the results, check the Survey Results in the Archive section of the Library.
New FAQ: Dead Space
Contrary to popular belief, dead space is not the stuff between Paul's ears! Rather, it's the component of an anesthetic circuit not involved in gas exchange. Airway dead space is present in all anesthetized patients. Dr. Robert Stein has authored an FAQ on Dead Space to help you understand what dead space is and how to minimize it. If you're looking for a current diagnostic or therapeutic tidbit, make your first stop the Medical FAQs collection. To make VIN even more helpful for you, the VIN team of consultants continues to create these up-to-date summaries of topics commonly asked on the message boards. Save time, check out the Medical FAQs -- before you post. To suggest a topic needing a Medical FAQ, email MRishniw@vin.com .

Evaluation of tongue as a complementary sample for the diagnosis of parvoviral infection in dogs and cats
These data confirm tongue as an excellent complementary sample for parvoviral testing in dogs and cats, especially in cases in which postmortem autolysis has occurred.
Risk factors for proximal sesamoid bone fractures associated with exercise history and horseshoe characteristics in Thoroughbred racehorses
Compared with horses that died without proximal sesamoid bone fractures, horses that died with proximal sesamoid bone fractures were more likely to be sexually intact males, spend more time in active training and racing, complete more events, train and race longer since their last layup, have higher exercise intensities during the 12 months prior to death, and have greater cumulative distances for their career.
Growth-promotant implants: managing the tools
With enhanced knowledge of the impact of various compounds and doses on different classes of animals, and with the introduction of numerous products providing those compounds and doses, planning implant programs has become difficult. However, the net return from a well-designed implant program may mean the difference between profit and loss on a given set of cattle.
Regulation of drugs used in feedlot diets
This article includes a discussion of what a drug is, how drugs are approved in the United States, what uses of drugs in feedlot diets are legal or illegal, and what is on the horizon for future drug regulations.

AVMA-PLIT worker's comp problem
Is it just me or is this outrageous? After all what am I paying thousands of dollars a year for if the insurance company is going to try to slime their way out of paying a claim. I suspect that if they persist they will eventually be able to compel us to give the client's information and then the client will see this as an agent for my hospital suing them. I will at best lose a good client and any future referral she might make, but it is certainly conceivable the client will countersue me.
Coping with massive debt
Before my husband & I got married 5 years ago, my finances were a little tight but manageable. I was building up my savings account, I had a 401K, had one credit card that I could pay more than the minimum but hadn’t quite paid off yet. Then we paid for our wedding ourselves, and my husband was out of work so we sent him back to school. We moved so I could work at a specialty practice, but our cost of living significantly increased and my pay didn’t. We have been struggling ever since, but I thought we were making it.
Choosing the best artificial tear product: patient responses vary
Most of the artificial tears are marketed because they are superior in this way or that way and the truth actually is that some work better for some patients than others no matter what the physical properties and claims. If there was one that truly was better we would have all settled on it long ago and there would not be so many on the market. Each one has pros and cons. Invariably when I found one that I thought was the best, I would have clients come in who said this one or that one was recommended by/in their pharmacist, aunt, uncle, yoga instructor, a dream, their dog channeling it to them, (take your pick) so I long ago gave up trying to predict it based upon science.
Major surgeries in extremely fractious cats
We keep them in a very quiet room and keep an intravenous (IV) catheter in and fluids running. When we need to do anything we use microdoses of Domitor IV to handle the animal. We give as many drugs IV as we can (avoiding those that go intramuscularly or orally). If we have to do this for a week, we will, but most only need to be here a few days depending on the surgery.

Website Of The Week: Stolen ID Search and more...
Get More From VIN! Search Tip: With more information, the search is more likely to return the results you want: enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM. General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful. For more help and tips on searching see Steps To A More Effective Search.
