Make a Difference: Participate in Clinical Research
Between the demands of practice and personal life, your precious free time (if you have any) is probably limited. Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office? Simply visit the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page to find a study recruiting patients. Be a part of the solution. Help lead the way in answering questions that matter. New Study: If you have a patient who fits the criteria for this newly added clinical trial, click the link to see how to enroll. Check the clinical trials page to see if one of the other ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients. If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.
Lily Toxicity Survey Results
In September, VINners participated in a survey exploring veterinarians' awareness of and experience with lily toxicity. 1248 VINners responded to the survey and the results are now available in the VIN Library. About twenty percent of those responding were unsure of the level of pet owner awareness in their practice. The survey results will be used to develop an awareness campaign and potentially lobby florists to include labeling of lilies to increase pet owners knowledge of the potential danger. If you participated in another survey and haven't seen the results, check the Surveys and Clinical Research area in the Library.

Implications of predatory specialization for cranial form and function in canids
The long, narrow jaws of small prey specialists appear to reflect selection for fast jaw closure at the expense of bite force. Generalists have intermediate jaw dimensions and produce moderate bite forces, but their crania are comparable in strength to those of small prey specialists. Canids that take large prey have short, broad jaws, produce the largest bite forces, and possess very strong crania.
Septic shock in canine babesiosis
The mortality rate in non-septic shock canine babesiosis was 2.6%. All dogs that developed septic shock died between the first and the fourth day after admission. The 100% mortality rate that is reported here reflects the fact that in cases in which progression of the inflammatory response leads to the development of septic shock, an unfavourable outcome should be expected.
Antimicrobial drug use and reason for treatment in 203 western Canadian cow-calf herds during calving season
The most commonly used antimicrobial drugs in these herds were tetracyclines, sulphonamides, and florfenicol.

Benzyl alcohol in Advantage 55 melted plastic dog crate
On examination, the poor dog was panting - had not urinated or defecated for over 15 hours. Could not get to its water bowl and food bowl as it was stuck. The dog was stuck to the plastic base and it took a scraper to free the dog off its attachment. I asked the owner if there was any other chemical around - nada. Then I used alcohol on the plastic base - no effect. Then I opened an Advantage 55 tube from same lot to the plastic - lo and behold - the plastic became liquid and my gloved hand got stuck to the plastic. It was as if the dog had rolled over a bit and then some of the Advantage 55 got to the plastic and hence dog got stuck.
Stress can affect the lymphocyte count
Mainly lymphopenia reflects chronic stress. I am beginning to think some of the low WBCs are a reflection of technology and the fact that the cats almost always have platelet clumps. Or perhaps we need to maintain and establish reference intervals for cats >10 years. I don't think the low counts in older cats are uncommon and I would make sure to get a slide review to verify the counts are corressponding to the blood film. The lymphopenia in this case may reflect chronic stress from the renal insufficiency and dental disease. who knows how much discomfort cats are in with renal disease and dental disease, would always check for chronic pyelo also.
Cardiopulmonary cerebrovascular resuscitation: Is it worthwhile in dogs and cats?
My conclusion is that, if the animal has a cardiopulmonary arrest and is not anesthetized, it's toast...

Search Tip: Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search: - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search. - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful. For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.
