Low Stress Patient Handling
"The reason our handling of these pets is important is that if we don't address the fear, we can actually make the animal way worse, both at home and in the veterinary hospital," says Sophia Yin, DVM, MS.Join her this Sunday at 10 pm EDT for Low Stress Handling Of Difficult Dogs And Cats and learn some new ways to handle fearful and aggressive dogs for procedures. To find out what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

Wolbachia infection in Australasian and North American populations of Haematobia irritans (Diptera: Muscidae)
Wolbachia are vertically transmitted intracellular bacteria that can profoundly influence host reproduction and fitness and are of increasing interest for use in biocontrol programs. To determine whether Australian flies are infected with Wolbachia, buffalo flies were collected from 12 cattle herds around Australia and assayed by standard PCR for the Wolbachia wsp gene. H. i. exigua from Indonesia and horn fly (H. i. irritans) from Canada were also tested.
Prevalence of gastric ulcerations in horses with colic
This suggests that horses that are hospitalized may be at increased risk for developing gastric ulcers because of stress, feed deprivation, and administration of treatment. Thus, horses that present for colic should be gastroscopically evaluated if clinical signs raise the index of suspicion for gastric ulceration.
Sex-related plasma disposition of ivermectin following pour-on administration in goats
The terminal half-life and mean plasma residence time in male goats (2.35 days and 4.78 days, respectively) were significantly longer compared with female animals (1.42 days and 3.55 days, respectively), suggesting that the excretion patterns of ivermectin in male and female animals are probably different from each other.

Recall: Premium Edge, because it was causing ataxia in cats
I suspect that these kitties got into something - owners swear that there is nothing in the house or basement and that there is no new food, no drugs etc. Any thoughts? I would think that it would be unlikely to be something infectious hitting both cats exactly the same day/time.
Any advice on hiring staff?
I hate to say it but, I got a great deal of information from the book "Small Business Management for Dummies". Yes, it is one of those "For Dummies" books. Lots of good information on taxes, organization, employees, etc. Also a great section on forms of all types (included on a CD as well). My attorney and accountant were indispensable. I really wanted to give you the list of interview questions I have been using for several years. It has helped me keep focus in the interview. I usually edit it on the fly as the situation presents itself.
Heartworm positive dog absolutely freaks out in vet clinic: Option for sedation, heartworm treatment and desensitization to clinic visits
The dog freaked out as soon as he got into the clinic. He thrashed around on the leash, threw pee and poo everywhere, screamed like he was being cut by a vivisectionist, etc. He was the worst I have ever seen.
Cats Rule: Can cats manipulate humans with vocal commands?
This meow is actually a purr mixed with a high-pitched cry. While people usually think of cat purring as a sign of happiness, some cats make this purr-cry sound when they want to be fed. The study showed that humans find these mixed calls annoying and difficult to ignore.

Search Tip: Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search: - Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search. - General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful. For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.
