Pooches and Pain: NSAID Info For Your Clients
NSAIDs are commonly used to control pain in dogs, however, many pet owners may not know how to use them safely.

To help you educate your clients on the correct use of NSAIDs in dogs, the FDA has published a brochure which includes important information all pet owners should know. (Dial-up users may prefer to access the text version.)

Help your clients to be better informed about many other topics with the Client Education Resources listed in the VIN Library.

Characterization of the biological behaviour of appendicular osteosarcoma in rottweilers and a comparison with other breeds: a review of 258 dogs
There were no significant differences between Rottweilers and other breeds in age at diagnosis, median disease-free interval, or survival time. However, Rottweilers were more likely to have metastasis to the brain (7 versus 0%). These results suggest that osteosarcoma in Rottweilers may have a different biological behaviour, but this study did not confirm that these differences were associated with a worse outcome.

Inhibition of telomerase in canine cancer cells following telomestatin treatment
We examined the ability of telomestatin to inhibit telomerase activity in telomerase-positive D17 and CMT7 canine cancer cell lines. At a concentration of 2 uM, telomestatin treatment resulted in a decrease in telomerase activity, telomere shortening, growth inhibition, and apoptosis in telomerase-positive cancer cells. These results confirm that telomestatin specifically inhibits telomerase activity in canine cancer cells and strengthens the usefulness of dogs as a model for testing telomerase-based therapies.

The effect of plain, eggbar and 6 degrees-wedge shoes on the distribution of pressure under the hoof of horses at the walk
Both the eggbar and 6 degrees-wedge shoe offer advantages for the horse with palmar heel pain, though choice of shoe will depend on clear identification of the causative factors, to provide therapeutic shoeing that maximises the individual horse's response.

An outbreak of rickets in Corriedale sheep: evidence for a genetic aetiology
This disease is likely to be present in several Corriedale sheep flocks in New Zealand and may have been misdiagnosed as arthritis or other diseases causing lameness and/or poor growth. A defect in end-organ responsiveness to 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D is the likely mechanism. This disease of sheep may be a useful model for studying vitamin D metabolism and the treatment of inherited forms of rickets in human beings.

Dog Was Repeatedly Heartworm Test Negative, Yet Died From Heartworm Disease (Radiographs)
Upon initial reveiw of the radiographs, all four doctors here said heartworms. But with a good history of prevention and two negative tests six months apart, we felt it was necessary to keep looking for another diagnosis.

Otitis In Cats: Using T8/Baytril Mixtures
Unfortunately, systemic absorption of topical Baytril is just not studied. I would tend to use topical tobramycin or tobradex, if it is a Pseudomonas ear.

How visible are nylabones on rads?
I tried a search on VIN but came up empty. I don't have a nylabone in the hospital to try this myself. How clearly/well delineated/obvious is a nylabone on survey rads?

Why we shouldn't use Depo-Medrol
I would like some feedback on giving high doses of Depo-Medrol for allergies. I have alway given the standard of dose of 20mg/20# with success. Another veterinarian gives much higher doses,(20mg/10#) and many patients respond better and longer with this regimen.
