Resistance Is Futile....Or Is It?
Why are dogs on heartworm prevention getting heartworms? Is the problem tougher parasites, poor owner compliance or something else entirely?

Join Tom Nelson, DVM, this Sunday to discuss Heartworm Preventives: Is Resistance A Reality?

Use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. To find out what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

There have been lots of discussions about veterinary wages and benefits for owners, associates, new grads and not-so-new grads.

This veterinary wage survey is intended to provide colleagues -- from one doctor practices to large multi-doctor practices -- with a picture of current veterinary wages and benefits.

If you and your fellow VINners respond accurately to this survey, it will be possible -- using new tools we have ready for you to test -- for you to not only *view* the results of this survey -- but to *customize the results* so they include only data from colleagues whose situations are most similar to yours.

The survey contains no more than 25 questions and should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

Responses will be summarized and shared with VINners. Thom Haig will also present some of the results in his presentation at the 2009 Western Veterinary Conference.

If you have any questions or concerns, email Paul@vin.com -- or participate in the discussion.

How Many Fat Felines and Pudgy Pooches Are Out There?
On Wednesday, October 15, 2008, the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention will set out to obtain real-world data concerning pet obesity in the United States in the Second Annual National Pet Obesity Awareness Day Study.

Participating veterinarians will be asked to record simple information for each pet examined on that day. The goal of the study is to determine more accurately the exact number of pets in the United States that are overweight or obese. Participation should add no more than 1-2 minutes to your normal physical examination routine. This study is independent of any and all corporate sponsorships or involvements.

Oral supplementation with l-lysine did not prevent upper respiratory infection in a shelter population of cats
The finding that lysine did not prevent upper respiratory infections in this animal shelter suggests that shelters may better use their resources by finding ways to decrease stress among their feline population, focusing on proper infection control measures, and limiting fomite transmission of disease.

Prevalence of and risk factors for hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament deficiency in dogs
Prevalence of and risk factors for hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament deficiency in dogs
Castrated male dogs were significantly more likely than other dogs to have hip dysplasia (HD) (odds ratio [OR], 1.21), and castrated male (OR, 1.68) and spayed female (OR, 2.35) dogs were significantly more likely to have cranial cruciate ligament deficiency (CCLD).

Tetanus in the equine species: a retrospective study of 31 cases
The development of dyspnoea, recumbency, and the combination of dysphagia, dyspnoea, and recumbency was observed significantly more in the non-survivors than in the survivors.

    Regulation of immunity in bronchiectasis
Bronchiectasis is a chronic, progressive lung disease where there is irreversible, abnormal dilatation of one or more bronchi, with chronic airway inflammation, associated chronic cough and sputum production, recurrent chest infections, and airflow obstruction.

    Health care benefits
It is a sad state of affairs that health insurance is so expensive, but I look at it as a moral obligation for me to provide it for my staff and I always have, in spite of the ever increasing costs. Every couple of years we have to re evaluate what we offer as our costs go up.

    Veterinary school costs
Eventually I'm afraid that Veterinary school will become so cost prohibitive, that only those with secondary sources of income will be able to attend. I have also found that many men are foregoing veterinary school (even when they love animals) to go to medical school.

Ethylene glycol toxicosis in cats and dogs: ethanol dilution and dosing
When using ethanol for treatment of ethylene glycol toxicosis, how is it diluted to the proper concentration? Also, what are the dosages for cats and dogs?

Medicated meatball recipes for vicious dog sedation and euthanasia
Beuthanaisa in a meatball works very well. 1cc/10lb is enough to put any of them out for 8 hours or longer. Some will go ahead and pass on, which is the whole goal.
