Osteosarcomas - Can We Palliate Them and Provide Pain Management?
Tim Fan, DVM and Louis-Philippe de Lorimier, DVM, ACVIM at the University of Illinois are examining the effects of various therapies for pain management and palliation of canine osteosarcoma. Osteosarcoma patients in the midwestern United States may be eligible for these quality-of-life studies.

Be sure to visit the clinical trials research page to see what clinical studies VIN is helping support or publicize - maybe your patients can help answer some of these questions!

What Neurology Imaging Equipment Do You Use?
Do you provide or refer patients for advanced imaging? Please take this brief survey to help create a snapshot of how accessible neurological imaging technology is to the VIN community. We will share the results collected and continue to update the data over time.

House dust and forage mite allergens and their role in human and canine atopic dermatitis
Allergens causing allergic disease in dogs seem to be different from those in humans. Dogs seem to react to high molecular weight allergens, compared to the low molecular weight group 1 and group 2 proteases that are commonly implicated in humans with atopic diseases.

Pharmacokinetics of clomipramine and desmethylclomipramine after single-dose intravenous and oral administrations in cats
The present study showed marked pharmacokinetic variability for clomipramine and its metabolite, desmethylclomipramine through biphasic absorption and potential genetic variability in clomipramine metabolism.

Cortical allograft and endoprosthesis for limb-sparing surgery in dogs with distal radial osteosarcoma: a prospective clinical comparison of two different limb-sparing techniques
An endoprosthesis is an attractive alternative to cortical allografts for limb-salvage of the distal aspect of the radius in dogs because surgical and oncologic outcomes are similar, but the endoprosthesis is an immediately available off-the-shelf implant which is not complicated by the bone harvesting and banking requirements associated with cortical allografts.

Evaluation of the effect of two dose rates of cyclosporine on the severity of perianal fistulae lesions and associated clinical signs in dogs
The 5 mg/kg dose rate significantly accelerated lesion resolution compared with 2 mg/kg. In the 2 mg/kg group, 20% of dogs had complete resolution of clinical signs and 10% had resolution of lesions. In the 5 mg/kg group, 40% of dogs had complete resolution of clinical signs and 60% had resolution of lesions.

I Just Started My First Job As A Veterinarian And I Love It - But When Will I Stop Being So Nervous?
I have no problem telling people -- I do not know, but I will find out. Most people seem to appreciate this. I do remember being a new grad, though, and thinking that I must be the only one who can't answer all the questions!

Great Discussion Of The Use Of Screening Tests In General Practice; Accelerated Idioventricular Rhythm On Electrocardiogram
Running routine yearly bloodwork is as unnecessary as routine ECGs, in my opinion. Especially in animals who are young and healthy and have little chance of having a true abnormality.

After doing surgery on an egg-bound desert tortoise with a large urolith, what postoperative complications might you encounter? How long does it take the shell to heal?
