North American Companion Animal Formulary in the VIN Library!
This online version of the North American Companion Animal Formulary (NACAF) includes over 1900 references to the use of over 950 drugs. The uses and doses of the drugs listed are those established by the Michigan Veterinary Specialists or recommended following a review of contemporary veterinary literature. Wherever possible, veterinary and human drug trade names are indicated.
Common Dermatological Diagnostic Tests
Many procedures can be performed in the clinic to help diagnose or rule-out skin disorders. An accurate diagnosis relies on good sample collection, whether for in-house analysis or for submission to a diagnostic service. The Common Dermatological Diagnostic Tests Medical FAQ (written by VIN Consultant Keith Hnilica - DipACVD) provides guidelines for procuring a sample that is likely to be of diagnostic quality when investigating skin diseases. Etiology and pathogenesis of osteochondrosis
The term osteochondrosis has been used to describe a wide range of different lesions among different species. We suggest a refinement of this terminology to include the modifiers latens (lesion confined to epiphyseal cartilage), manifesta (lesion accompanied by delay in endochondral ossification), and dissecans (cleft formation through articular cartilage). The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the disease, focusing on the most commonly cited theories, recent research findings, and our own views regarding the etiology and pathogenesis of osteochondrosis.
A big problem
When it comes to setting weight loss goals for pets, don't make it about the pounds at first. Too often we limit the discussion to losing weight when it really should be centered on improving overall health. Focus on increasing activity and decreasing calories.
Diagnosing pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction
Equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) affects aged horses and ponies and is associated with life-threatening complications, such as laminitis. Early diagnosis and treatment may prevent the progression of clinical signs and development of disease sequelae.
Mycobacterium fortuitum pneumonia in a cat and the role of lipid in the pathogenesis of atypical mycobacterial infections
We report a cat with granulomatous pneumonia caused by M fortuitum resembling lipoid pneumonia in humans. We discuss the role of lipids in the pathogenesis of mycobacterioses and suggest an association between atypical mycobacteria and lipid-rich environments. We conclude that M fortuitum should be included as a differential in cases of lipid-rich pneumonias that do not respond to common antibiotics.

Sharps disposal
Just checking with sharps disposal costs and have seen how mine have risen. I put whole syringes and all vaccine bottles in. Some have said that can just put needles in and destroy syringes with a scissors or bush trimmer and throw vaccine vials away. What's the real law? Does it change from state to state?
Veterinarian refuses to work with MRSA positive staffer
A technician at our practice has two family members that had MRSA infections. Her doctor took a nasal swab to culture and she came back positive for MRSA, but has not had any active infections. I believe her doctor put her on a course of antibiotics.
Milk withholding time for goat dairy
Client just starting a goat dairy. I have not been able to find much in the way of milk withdrawal times for medications in dairy goats. FARAD hasn't been a rewarding search(unless I'm using it wrong). Where can I find useful information to put on prescription labels?
Fluticasone for feline asthma?
I have been searching here and on the internet to try to determine what is the most current recommendation is for starting cats with moderate asthma on inhaled fluticasone.
