New Clinical Studies Seeking Participants
Between the demands of practice and personal life, your precious free time (if you have any) is probably limited. Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office?

Simply visit the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page to find a study recruiting patients. Be a part of the solution. Help lead the way in answering questions that matter.

If you have a patient who fits the criteria for any of these newly added clinical trials, click the link to see how to enroll. Check the clinical trials page to see if one of the other ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

Effect of pimobendan on case fatality rate in doberman pinschers with congestive heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy
Therapy consisted of furosemide (per os [PO] as required) and benazepril hydrochloride (0.5 mg/kg PO every 12 hours) and dogs were randomized in pairs and by sex to receive pimobendan (0.25 mg/kg PO every 12 hours) or placebo (1 tablet PO every 12 hours). Pimobendan-treated dogs had a significant improvement in time to treatment failure (pimobendan median, 130.5 days; placebo median, 14 days).

Comparison of postprandial and ceruletide serum bile acid stimulation in dogs
Ceruletide serum bile acid (SBA) stimulation circumvents exogenous and endogenous influences associated with postprandial (PP) SBA stimulation. The results indicate that ceruletide SBA stimulation performs as well as PP SBA stimulation in dogs with portosystemic shunt and is more sensitive for the detection of hepatic dysfunction in dogs with upper respiratory disease.

Tetanus in the equine species: a retrospective study of 31 cases
The development of dyspnoea, recumbency, and the combination of dysphagia, dyspnoea, and recumbency was observed significantly more in the non-survivors than in the survivors.

UNAM seeks AVMA accreditation
Is the quality of the education received at this institution really equivalent to that from other schools? I would hope that accreditation will not be given unless that is true, but I really know very little about how these things work.

The economic blues
Now I am sure many of you don't feel as "blue" as I do about the economy. But in 25 years in this industry, I have NEVER SEEN so many bad signs in our economy all at once. (And I was working during the 1990 - 1991 recession.) But here is my suggestion, be cautious with your spending.

Bullous emphysema in a nine week old Labrador mix
It is hard to believe this puppy is functional and not in distress, looking at how little potentially-functional lung space there is. Amazing, actually.

Intestinal foreign body in an anorexic dog
The nephew brought over a superball and obviously forgot to take it back with him when he left! I found it in the mid to distal duodenum. Ten days post presentation, the dog still was bouncing around. Forget 'classic presentation' -- shows you how important followup is.
