Legal Specialty Center with Red Flags Rule Materials

Desmopressin is safer than water deprivation to identify the cause of polyuria and polydipsia in dogs
Even with a desmopressin trial, caution should be exercised in geriatric patients and those having isosthenuria.
Finding and treating oral melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and fibrosarcoma in dogs
Poorly pigmented or amelanotic melanomas are examples of tumors that can be challenging to diagnose. Cytology can help in some of these cases, and special stains can be used on histologic samples. The immunohistochemical markers Melan A, vimentin, and S-100 protein can help confirm the diagnosis of melanoma in amelanotic variants as well as in poorly differentiated tumors.
Surgical removal of a descending (small) colon foreign body through a secondary paramedian approach
Intestinal obstruction due to foreign body ingestion is one cause of colic in horses. Although it occurs more frequently in juveniles, adult horses also may be affected. The small colon is a common location in which foreign bodies can be found.

How to prevent clipper burns
Do you ever disassemble the blades? If you do, you'll find blood and hair and nasty stuff in them, even if cleaned diligently. Getting this stuff out, and lubricating the contact surfaces will make them last a lot longer.
Phlebotomy setup
I recently saw a canine patient with a renal tumor (discovered on ultrasound) and a PCV of 87% and performed phlebotomy for 2 days prior to nephrectomy. Removing 500 mL of blood via syringes proved to be very tiring and painful for the techs' hands, so we came up with a unique method.
You know you're still new when...
Reminds me of the bot fly larvae necklace one of my anatomy instructors had. The larvae were painted silver and strung with lavender beads. She'd wear it every time we got to the stomach in Large Animal anatomy lab.
Injectable anesthetic protocols for spaying dogs
I volunteer at a shelter in the Caribbean, running a spay/neuter clinic. Periodically, we're asked to help a neighboring island that has no veterinary service. We're getting pressure to do a short run. We're going without gas inhalation.
