West Nile virus encephalomyelitis in horses in Ontario: 28 cases
West Nile virus encephalomyelitis was diagnosed in 28 horses presented to the Ontario Veterinary College Veterinary Teaching Hospital between August 20 and October 15, 2002. This pathogen is emerging as an important cause of neurological disease in Canada.

Review of the pharmacokinetics, interactions and adverse reactions of cyclosporine in people, dogs and cats
In human medicine, adverse reactions (especially nephrotoxicity) to the drug are common, but in dogs given the commonly used oral dose of 5 mg/kg per day there have been few adverse reactions. However, no toxicity studies lasting longer than 12 months have been carried out in this species.

Acid-base balance of cats with chronic renal failure: effect of deterioration in renal function
Data were analysed from 55 cats with CRF that had been followed longitudinally for at least four months. Twenty-one cases showed deterioration in renal function over the period of the study, as evidenced by significant rises in their plasma creatinine concentrations and decreases in bodyweight. In five of the 21 cases, acidaemia accompanied the deterioration in renal function. Only one of these cats had evidence of metabolic acidosis before renal function deterioration.

Primary secretory otitis media in the Cavalier King Charles spaniel: a review of 61 cases
Primary secretory otitis media is an important differential diagnosis in Cavalier King Charles spaniels with signs of pain involving the head and neck, and/or neurological signs.

Unofficial Competition For Biggest Mass Ever Removed
Just wanted to share a photo of this splenic mass, which I removed yesterday (sans assistance) from a 69 lb. Labrador. The caliper on the table is 16" long. The tumor weighed in at 15.3 lbs., which is my personal all-time record -- almost double my previous record, an 8 lb. ovarian tumor.

Horse Vaccination Frequency Guidelines
For WNV, I think most are giving a series of 2-3 injections, 3-4 weeks apart, followed by semi-annual (every six months) boosters.

Chronic Pin Feather Treatments
In the wild, parrots rely on their conspecifics to preen off the sheath of the pin feathers on their head and neck. Without another bird or human to do this, the pin feathers will not open up. You can gently roll the feather between your fingers to flake off the sheath.

Ultrasonic Subgingival Scaling: Yes Or No?
I have been reviewing dental prophys and am confused about cleaning subgingival calculus deposits. Can you or can't you use a special tip on an ultrasonic unit for cleaning under the gum?
