Sunday Rounds: Sink Your Teeth into Dentistry!
Join Jan Bellows, DVM, DAVDC, DABVP, and Paul Camilo for Implementing The Oral ATP Philosophy In Your Dental Practice. The terms "dental" or "prophy" don't properly describe the comprehensive care included in an oral hygiene and teeth cleaning procedure. Learn how to implement proper dental care in your practice and educate clients on the value of a healthy mouth for their pets.

Use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. To find out what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

If you can't attend, be sure to check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN or next Tuesday's VIN This Week for links to the transcript of the discussion.

COMMUNICATION is what VIN is all about!
To help you understand what your fellow VINners are saying on the message boards, peruse these compilations of some of the most commonly used abbreviations. If you'd like to contribute one or more of your own, send an e-mail to Becky@vin.com with your suggestions.

Practice Management Survey: Contribute Your Perspective!
The Drug Pricing Survey is the first in a series from VIN's Practice Management Center. The results from these surveys will offer snapshots of pricing structures in veterinary practices.

The more VINners who contribute to these surveys, the more meaningful the data! Please make your contribution to this community resource by completing the Drug Pricing Survey.

Does clenbuterol positively affect racing horses?
Numerous studies in horses have failed to demonstrate clear ergogenic benefits of clenbuterol, and, in some cases, have demonstrated impaired exercise capacity. Thus, the current body of evidence supports the use of clenbuterol only as a specific treatment for horses with chronic airway disease, but not for healthy horses as a performance-enhancing drug.

Custom total knee replacement in a dog with femoral condylar bone loss
Based on short-term follow-up, cemented canine total knee replacement (TKR) was successfully achieved for management of a severely abnormal stifle joint. With further refinement and development of commercially available prostheses, TKR should be possible for canine patients.

Spirocerca lupi infection in the dog: A review
Doramectin is the current drug of choice, effectively killing adult worms and decreasing egg shedding. Early diagnosis of infection is still a challenge and to date no ideal regimen for prophylaxis has been published.

Emergency and critical care of fish
Most fish emergencies are the result of inappropriate environmental conditions and primary or secondary infectious disease or trauma. The immediate response should be to increase aeration, provide suitable water, and decrease stressors. Some common emergencies include ammonia and nitrite toxicity; low dissolved oxygen; copper and chlorine toxicity; gas supersaturation; and certain bacterial, protozoal, and viral diseases.

Pectineal myotomy for hip dysplasia?
We were having a discussion about doing Pectineal Myotomies for treating advanced cases of hip dysplasia. Is any one still doing these?

Percutaneous decompression of bloat
New grad here, I've not dealt with a GDV (yet) but after reading several posts I get the feeling that passing an orogastric tube isn't necessarily everyone's recommended approach these days.

Prophylactic fastropexy for Great Danes?
Have a 4 month old female Great Dane puppy as a patient. Am wondering if we should perform a prophylactic gastropexy at time of ovh.

Does mederma work?
I saw a Boxer today post-op for noncancerous mass removal, and she had some mild dehiscence of her incision leading to granulation/scar formation. The area is right along her topline, and within licking distance. I was curious about the human product Mederma (sp?) which is touted to decrease the appearance of scars. Is it safe for dogs? How about if ingested?
