In The News: Jerky Treats Contamination Suspected
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently testing multiple brands of jerky treats manufactured in China following reports of dogs experiencing vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy after ingestion.

Read the AVMA press release and take part in the VIN message board discussion.

What's The Dose?
When searching for information on drugs, one useful trick is to click the Drug Resources tab to limit your search to information from Plumb's Drug Handbook, the NAC Animal Formulary, COMPASS MSDS Sheets, the CVP Drug Label Database, the Pet Pharmacy (client handouts) and other valuable drug resources.

Find even more helpful information on the Drug Resources page in the Library.

Practice Management Survey: Contribute Your Perspective!
The Drug Pricing Survey is the first in a series from VIN's Practice Management Center. The results from these surveys will offer snapshots of pricing structures in veterinary practices.

The more VINners who contribute to these surveys, the more meaningful the data! Please make your contribution to this community resource by completing the Drug Pricing Survey.

Find the Perfect Form or Handout!
Thanks to the generosity of VINners, you have access to a collection of sample forms, clipart, and handouts currently being used in various veterinary practices, all gathered together in the Veterinary Forms Collection. Many of the forms are available for download in convenient MS Word files that you may modify for use in your own practice!

Shock and cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation in small mammals and birds
Using the general principles of cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation in small animals, protocols are discussed for use in birds and small mammals.

Thromboembolic therapies in dogs and cats: an evidence-based approach
In this article, specific treatment recommendations are made for each of the common thromboembolic conditions seen in dogs and cats. These recommendations are made with the important caveat that, to date, such suggested therapeutic approaches are based on limited evidence.

Emergency care of reptiles
Using an abdominal bandage following an exploratory laparotomy may help reduce the prevalence of post-operative incisional complications, and prevent the development of potentially life-threatening complications.

Incisional complications following exploratory celiotomy: does an abdominal bandage reduce the risk?
Based on the literature identified in the authors' review, there is insufficient evidence to make a recommendation for or against any of the topical wound agents or procedures studied.

Carpal mass: wound repair options
I've looked, but can't find specific info on the best way to approach this problem. Patient is an 11 y/o F/S Shpeherd mix, with a recurrence of a grade 1 peripheral nerve sheath tumor on the LF. It's been a yr since initial removal and histopath, and no surprise, mass returned. (O declined recut after initial histo, and visited with referral surgeon I sent her to- won't let him cut her dog.)

I warned the client the dog needed a behaviorist
Owner presented dog to me for annual PE and vx and mentioned the dog snapped at a child. I recommended she take the dog to a DACVB and warned against the public health threat of aggression towards children. I made a note in the record towards this effect and gave the owner the referral info, which she accepted.

Gunpowder ingestion
I have a dog that ate gunpowder pellets from fireowrks - Her intestines are coated with a radioopaque substance - wish I bought my camera - it looks like barium remnants. Dilated loops of bowel and increased rugal folds in stomach.

Puppy with fragile skin
I have a 5 month Golden that I have been treating for wounds on a regular basis. Her skin seems to be extremely fragile and tears easily with pretty minor trauma. Specially around her ears and face. She had large seromas in both elbows that were caused by bite wounds from her previous owner's other dog.

    Search Tip:
With more information, the search is more likely to return the results you want: enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM. General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
