If you can't attend, be sure to check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN or next Tuesday's VIN This Week for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Practice Management Survey: Feedback Needed
The Drug Pricing Survey is the first in a series from VIN's Practice Management Center. The results from these surveys will offer snapshots of pricing structures in veterinary practices -- a resource for VIN members to reference when considering their pricing policies.

The more VINners who take these surveys, the more accurate the data! Please make your contribution to this community resource by completing the Drug Pricing Survey.

In The News: Microchip Controversy
Have your clients heard that microchips may be associated with fibrosarcomas? Join the interesting discussion in progress on the Message Boards!

Pimobendan FAQ
Pimobendan has reached the US veterinary market and many VINners have questions about its use. Like every new drug, it is intially hailed as the next "wonder drug" by drug reps and speakers. While we discover the reality of its appropriate use, the Pimobendan FAQ provides a starting point for deciding if this new drug might be useful for your patients.

If you're looking for a current diagnostic or therapeutic tidbit, make your first stop the Medical FAQs collection. To make VIN even more helpful for you, the VIN team of consultants continue to create these up-to-date summaries of topics commonly discussed on the message boards. Save time, check out the Medical FAQs (and search the database) -- before you post.

A retrospective study of the relationship between tracheal collapse and bronchiectasis in dogs
The results of this study provide evidence of a link between tracheal collapse and bronchiectasis.

Use of intraoperative ultrasonography in canine spinal cord lesions
Ultrasound imaging directly impacted the surgical and the medical treatment plans in four patients. This study suggests that intraoperative sonographic spinal cord imaging is a useful and viable technique.

Experimental transmission and induction of ranaviral disease in Western Ornate box turtles (Terrapene ornata ornata) and red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans)
This study fulfills Koch's postulates, confirming a causal relationship between a Burmese star tortoise Ranavirus and the clinical and histologic changes in chelonians infected with this virus.

Ovarian and intestinal angiaomatosis in a horse
Dozens of red, raised nodules scattered along the serosal surface of the small intestine and the right and left ovaries were observed as incidental findings on gross examination in a 21-year-old Thoroughbred mare euthanatized for severe lameness. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of small intestinal and ovarian angiomatosis in a horse.

Carpal mass: wound repair options
I've looked, but can't find specific info on the best way to approach this problem. Patient is an 11 y/o F/S Shpeherd mix, with a recurrence of a grade 1 peripheral nerve sheath tumor on the LF. It's been a yr since initial removal and histopath, and no surprise, mass returned. (O declined recut after initial histo, and visited with referral surgeon I sent her to- won't let him cut her dog.)

I warned the client the dog needed a behaviorist
Owner presented dog to me for annual PE and vx and mentioned the dog snapped at a child. I recommended she take the dog to a DACVB and warned against the public health threat of aggression towards children. I made a note in the record towards this effect and gave the owner the referral info, which she accepted.

Gunpowder ingestion
I have a dog that ate gunpowder pellets from fireowrks - Her intestines are coated with a radioopaque substance - wish I bought my camera - it looks like barium remnants. Dilated loops of bowel and increased rugal folds in stomach.

Puppy with fragile skin
I have a 5 month Golden that I have been treating for wounds on a regular basis. Her skin seems to be extremely fragile and tears easily with pretty minor trauma. Specially around her ears and face. She had large seromas in both elbows that were caused by bite wounds from her previous owner's other dog.

With more information, the search is more likely to return the results you want: enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM. General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
