Help Your Colleagues In the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
Thank You! As of September 12th, over $108,000 has been donated via the VIN Foundation's Donation Site! Today, a new donation category has been added. Allocating all or part of your donation to the Spirit of Veterinary Medicine Hurricane Katrina Animal Relief Fund will direct your generosity to help support Animal Care at LSU. They are caring for over 1,500 animals without knowing how they are going to pay for the care. Please give them a hand so that their generously provided care does not end up draining the resources of the LSU VMTH and ultimately negatively impacting teaching and patient care. Donating via the VIN Foundation donation site, ensures that your donation will go directly to veterinary efforts working toward veterinary and animal relief. The VIN Foundation (a tax-exempt corporation) will ensure that 100% of your tax-deductible donation is forwarded to the relief efforts you designate. The VIN Foundation is paying all credit card transaction fees and programming costs related to this effort. Click here to donate. Thank you for helping us show our colleagues in need that the VIN/VSPN community and all colleagues are here to help. We will continue to maintain a link on VIN's Front Page so that you may easily access information about the current state of the Katrina disaster -- or if you wish to provide another donation as the problem continues.

The Use of 25% Human Serum Albumin: Outcome and Efficacy in Raising Serum Albumin and Systemic Blood Pressure in Critically Ill Dogs and Cats
This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of 66 animals receiving 25% human serum albumin (25% HSA) for a range of clinical problems. Clinical outcome as well as efficacy in raising serum albumin and systemic blood pressure was assessed. The authors concluded that 25% HSA can be safely administered to critically ill animals, and an increase in albumin levels and systemic BP can be expected.
Canine Serum Immunoreactivity to M. pachydermatis in vitro Is Influenced By the Phase of Yeast Growth

Cutaneous Manifestations of Neurological Diseases: Review of Neuro-Pathophysiology and Diseases Causing Pruritus
Pruritus does not always originate from stimulation to the skin associated with primary dermatological disorders. It may be caused by neurological or behavioural disorders.
Skin Disease Refresher-Chorioptic Mange
Chorioptes equi is an obligate parasite of horses that lives on epidermal debris. Asymptomatic carriers may be responsible for recurrent infestations and some horses are severely affected by few parasites, while others may show no evidence in spite of severe infestation. A product containing fipronil (Frontline) is effective in treatment of most cases of chorioptic mange, but is not licenced for use in the horse. A selenium sulphide based shampoo (Seleen) usually has an immediate and useful antipruritic effect.

What Dental Equipment Should I Purchase?
Get your dental xray machine first. You may know the crown is fractured, but you do not know the degree of periapical osteomyelitis that has developed or if there is ankylosis that will make the extraction 20 times harder and root canal treatment a much more attractive option. These things can be assessed only radiographically.
