Welcome to Stokes Pharmacy, the newest folder participant in the Vet Industry message board!
We're excited by the opportunities to share knowledge and support that Stokes Pharmacy will bring to the VIN community. Please take a moment to welcome our newest addition to the Vet Industry message board. (While you're in the industry folders, check out all of the other companies that are willing and able to answer your product questions!) A Note From Paul About Industry on VIN: As a result of the recent rapid rise in the number of industry folders on VIN, a few have written to ask if VIN has changed its position regarding independence from industry. Rest assured that nothing has changed. VIN remains committed to the VIN Policies on Commercialism. We all benefit from increased communication and access between colleagues in practice, academia, and industry. Facilitating this communication is our goal. We are pleased that more of our colleagues in industry are recognizing this and joining the discussion.

Inheritance of Cataract in the Bichon Frise
Thirty-six closely related Bichon Frise dogs in a pedigree of 61 dogs were examined using slit-lamp biomicroscopy and indirect ophthalmoscopy over a period of 10 years. Age at onset of cataract formation ranged from 18 to 160 months. Available information suggests that the cataracts are inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. The authors conclude that cataracts appear inherited in the Bichon Frise as an autosomal recessive trait. Additional cataract x cataract matings are necessary to confirm the autosomal recessive heredity.
Transfusion Reactions
A febrile nonhemolytic transfusion reaction is usually mild. After the patient has been reassessed, the blood production administration rate slowed, and diphenhydramine administered, the transfusion can be completed.
Use of Pedometers to Measure Physical Activity in Dogs
Results suggest that pedometers can measure physical activity in dogs with reasonable accuracy. A lower number of steps per day was associated with a higher body condition score, and less active owners generally had less active dogs.
Thromboelastography: A Tool for Measuring Hypercoagulability, Hypocoagulability, and Fibrinolysis
Thromboelastography, or TEG, has been used for documentation of hypercoagulable and hypocoagulable states in human medicine and has been shown to be beneficial in patient management, providing information about coagulation that is not available through routine coagulation tests. While clinical veterinary use has been limited so far, hypercoagulable conditions encountered in veterinary medicine make this test attractive. However, prospective clinical studies are needed.
