Two Great Rounds this Sunday!
Join Chantal Lainesse, DVM, MSc, PhD, DACVCP, for Clomipramine And Cats this Sunday, September 9, 8 pm EDT (Midnight Monday GMT).

Take a break and come back to join Brad White, DVM, MS, for Pre-Breeding Replacement Heifer Management at 10 pm EDT (02:00 am GMT). Learn how to help beef producers improve their herd's reproductive efficiency as well as some good management principles.

Use the Rounds link in the Main Navigation bar to join the discussion. To find out what other interesting rounds topics are coming soon, see This Week's Rounds Schedule.

If you can't attend, be sure to check the Rounds or Front Page of VIN or next Tuesday's VIN This Week for links to the transcript of the discussion.

Laminitis Videos in the VIN Library
Dr. Reid Hanson has generously provided some videoclips of a horse with acute laminitis. These video clips can be found in the VIN collection of slideshows and videos in the Library. If you didn't have empathy for Barbaro before, you certainly will after viewing these videos.

Pimobendan FAQ
Pimobendan has reached the US veterinary market and many VINners have questions about its use. Like every new drug, it is intially hailed as the next "wonder drug" by drug reps and speakers. While we discover the reality of its appropriate use, the Pimobendan FAQ provides a starting point for deciding if this new drug might be useful for your patients.

If you're looking for a current diagnostic or therapeutic tidbit, make your first stop the Medical FAQs collection. To make VIN even more helpful for you, the VIN team of consultants continue to create these up-to-date summaries of topics commonly discussed on the message boards. Save time, check out the Medical FAQs (and search the database) -- before you post.

Help Advance Veterinary Medicine!
Are you looking for clinical trials for which your patients might be eligible? Want to help your patient and advance veterinary medicine at the same time? You might be able to "kill two birds with one stone." The VIN Clinical Trials and Research Projects page lists many trials currently enrolling cases. Wander over and familiarize yourself with the trials - maybe you have a client and patient that fits the bill.

Calculate With Confidence!
You don't have to be Einstein to do these clinically useful calculations, but it sure is nice to be able to check yourself (or simply get the answers faster) using the growing collection of VIN Calculators.

  • Constant Rate Infusion
  • Phlebotomy
  • Transfusion
  • Energy Requirements
  • Converting to and from SI Units
  • Body Surface Area
  • Echocardiography Normals

Let the VIN Calculators do the math for you, and save your scrap paper for doodling.

Texas Farm Radio:

Bite wounds involving the spine: Characteristics, therapy and outcome in seven cases
Although, the numbers of reported cases are limited, this study shows that adequate surgical debridement and wound drainage, combined with external coaptation, can be sufficient to manage bite wounds that involve the spine.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis: Typical Findings and a New PCR Test
FIP virus replicates in circulating monocytes and produces mRNA, which can be detected with PCR testing.

Radiographic signs of renal disease in rabbits
The radiological features of 65 rabbits with suspected renal disease are reviewed. The radiological features included a generalised increase in bone opacity (osteosclerosis), renomegaly, nephroliths, ureteroliths and soft tissue mineralisation. One or more of these changes were present on radiographs of 57 of the 65 rabbits.

Search methods that people use to find owners of lost pets
Pet owners were found as a result of information provided by an animal agency (25%), placement of a newspaper advertisement (24%), walking the neighborhood (19%), signs in the neighborhood (15%), information on a pet tag (10%), and other methods (7%).

What about ProMeris?
I would like to know if there is anything new on the board, since June, about this (metaflumizone) product. Where are the MOA, pharmacokinetic, efficacy and safety data?

Transporting goldfish by car
A client is going to be moving from New York to Atlanta over a two day period and would like to know how best to transport her 5-6 year old goldfish. The move will be via car.

Dystocia guidelines
Recent grad here with basically no experience in small animal parturition/dystocia management (medical or surgical). I know this may sound crazy but it's true. I've been working for almost 3 months, taking emergency call for the past 6 weeks or so, and have yet to deal with this in the real world and didn't see it in any practical form at school either. Here I am on emergency tonight just waiting for a 3 a.m. dog-in-labor call.

Institutional animal care and use committee training
I am working with a research facility primarily using domestic livestock species. I am looking for some CE in this area. I have plenty of clinical experience here, but need help with regulations and rules.
