Soothe Your Pains With The Newest Online Book
Just added to the VIN Library: Pain Management for the Small Animal Practitioner; Second Edition by William J. Tranquilli, DVM, MS, DACVA; Kurt A. Grimm, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVA, ACVCP; and Leigh A. Lamont, DVM, MS, DACVA.

The goals of this book are to provide the veterinary practitioner with a description of common pain syndromes, review the drugs and techniques used to treat pain and suggest ways to manage pain arising from a variety of surgical procedures, trauma and diseases. Narrated videos demonstrate techniques including epidural procedures, infiltrative and dental blocks and intraarticular analgesia.

Thanks to the good folks at Teton New Media for making this Made Easy Series book available online to all VINners.

Don't Forget to Log Out!
Working in a multi-doctor practice? Make sure you are accessing and posting under your own name so you can enjoy your own personalized settings and MyStuff. There may be 50 ways to leave your lover but there are only two ways to logout of VIN:

  • From the Front Page
Look for the "Welcome, Dr..... " message at the top of the screen. Next to this you will see: (If you're not Dr..... , click here.)
Click the "click here" link and then click OK.
  • From Post New or Reply
To help you double-check while posting on the Message Boards, the Post New and Reply windows show the name of the member logged on and provide a link that allows you to change users.

Logging out from either location will keep you from accidentally impersonating a colleague.

(And just to be complete -- there is one other option: close all your browser windows -- including all of AOL, if you access via AOL)

Have You Explored Associate Yet?
Associate can help you with your feline, canine, public health and foreign animal disease/bioterrorism questions.

  • The Book section of Associate (canine and feline) has many new and updated disease chapters that serve as a great "starting point" for your clinical questions
  • The public health and foreign animal disease sections are up-to-date and soon, will be available in Spanish
  • The Tool section allows you to work through cases, clinical sign by clinical sign, building a list of diseases to consider. It won't build a true "differential diagnosis" but it is a great reminder of conditions you might have forgotten to consider in those "tougher" cases.

Click the Associate link on either the SEARCH or the Book section of the NEW LIBRARY page.
Questions? Click the HELP tab (right column in Associate) to learn more.

You Talk, We Listen!
The results of the VIN This Week Readership survey have been released for your comments. The VINTW publishing team has already begun implementing some changes to make VIN This Week valuable to you. Your feedback is always welcome!

Indirect measurement of blood pressure using a pulse oximeter in isoflurane-anesthetized dogs
Using regression analysis and a modified Bland-Altman's technique, the lowest bias was achieved with the Doppler. Systolic BP readings at low, normal, and high BP were within 10 mmHg of direct recordings 95%, 70%, and 30% of the time for pulse oximetry; 95%, 85%, and 55% of the time for Doppler; 42%, 65%, and 30% of the time for oscillometric determination, respectively. Oscillometric mean BP readings were within 10 mmHg of direct measurements 53%, 60%, and 45% of the time, respectively.

Evaluation of adding diltiazem therapy to standard treatment of acute renal failure caused by leptospirosis: 18 dogs (1998-2001)
Eleven out of 18 dogs received diltiazem. The rate of reduction in creatinine in the diltiazem group was 1.76 times faster than the standard group (P=0.054). Recovery of renal function showed a trend towards significant association with treatment group (exact P=0.08, odds ratio=3.62). This effect may be clinically relevant. Diltiazem had no clinically relevant effect on systolic blood pressure (SBP).

Surgical stapling devices in veterinary medicine: a review
Benefits and complications of surgical stapling depend on the procedure performed. Use of surgical staplers does not improve wound strength but may decrease surgical time.

Breathe with ease when managing beta2 agonist inhaler toxicoses in dogs
The most common clinical findings seen with beta2 agonist inhaler toxicoses can be grouped into general categories: tachycardia, premature ventricular contractions; lethargy, weakness; tachypena, panting; behavioral changes associated with central nervous system stimulation (aggression, agitation); vomiting and trembling or tremors.

Bird/small mammal ward requirements
Any help here would be very much appreciated. I am building a new hospital that treats dogs/cats/birds and small mammals and I have designed both an avian/exotic (small mammal) exam room, and an avian ward to house sick birds and small mammals in this ward.

Zoonotic potential of rotaviruses
Are the rotavirus strains dogs and cats get transmissable to humans? My 2 month old daughter got a rotavirus vaccine and her pediatrician asked me if there were zoonotic potential from dogs and cats - I didn't think so but I thought I would ask the experts!

Time to start tube-feeding these kittens?
I am currently fostering a mama cat who was initially scheduled for a spay at our clinic, until we examined her and realized that she was about to go into labor.

What about those new breed determination tests for mutts?
Looks like Metamorphix Inc has their canine breed test on line now
