Would YOU like to mentor a vet student?

Vet students want to learn from practicing veterinarians how the things that they are memorizing are going to be important in the future. By matching vet students with practicing veterinarians, VIN hopes to demonstrate the relevance of the classroom knowledge. We match vet students with veterinarians who have similar practice interests. From there, it's up to the participants to correspond via email as frequently or infrequently as they wish. Help your future colleagues learn about practice life, sign up to be a mentor in the Adopt-A-Vet/Student Program.

Corticosteroid Synthesis and Metabolism in Birds
Even topical corticosteroids can lead to toxic blood levels. To lessen the likelihood of toxicity, alternate-day application at double the daily dose is advisable if these drugs must be given over the long term.

My Worst Mistakes - and the Lessons I Learned
It took me too long to learn that running a business doesn't make employees the enemy.

Disseminated Blastomycosis with Ocular Involvement in a Dog
Current recommendations for treating blastomycosis call for administering itraconazole (5 mg/kg orally b.i.d.) for five days, and then reducing the dose to once a day for the duration of therapy. Treatment should be continued for at least 60 days or for one month after clinical signs resolve.

Aortic Thromboembolism Associated with Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hyperkalemia and metabolic acidosis are significant complications associated with reperfusion of ischemic tissues.

Ehrlichia Positive On Routine Sampling
There is no specific titer that correlates with 'active' disease. Clinically affected animals may have negative titers. Also, high titers can persist in asymptomatic animals for years.

Synovitis In ACL Dog
WHOA! Any dog that has an ACL injury will have, on biopsy, lymphocytic-plasmacytic synovitis. I would NOT treat this dog with immunosuppressives unless there is more compelling evidence of underlying immune-mediated disease.

CaOx Diet, Struvite Diet
Struvite crystalluria is not pathologic in dogs (if they don't have a UTI) and it can be found in over 1/2 of the urine samples from healthy dogs.

Lung Pattern
The first thing that I have to ask is, was the animal under anesthesia or sedation at the time the radiographs were made? If so, then you are probably looking at hypostatic congestion and not disease.
