The Clock is Ticking...
You may have noticed the message boards are sporting a new look. The VIN Wizards are transitioning everyone to Message Boards 2.0. For a while, you'll be able to switch back if you have troubles but Message Boards 2.0 will soon be the only version available.

There are some known browser issues, so now may be the time to stop procrastinating and upgrade to a more recent version of your favorite browser.

And remember, VIN is YOUR community so please post feedback!

    New Clinical Trial Seeking Participants
Between the demands of practice and personal life, your precious free time (if you have any) is probably limited. Did you know you can contribute to veterinary research without leaving your home or office?

Simply visit the Clinical Trials & Research Projects page to find a study recruiting patients. Be a part of the solution. Help lead the way in answering questions that matter.

If you have a patient who fits the criteria for this newly added clinical trial, click the link to see how to enroll. Check the clinical trials page to see if one of the other ongoing trials might make new or novel therapies available for your patients.

If you would like to add your clinical trial or research project, please complete this survey or contact mrishniw@vin.com.

    Guidelines for evaluating hypercalcemic cats
Always verify hypercalcemia with a repeat total calcium (tCa) or ionized calcium (iCa) concentration measurement. An elevated iCa concentration defines true hypercalcemia.

Interrelationships of dogs (Canis familiaris) and cats (Felis catus L.) living under the same roof
Both species showed a similar ability to establish a relatively amicable relationship with the other species; the animals’ gender had little influence on the nature of their interrelationship; and adoption of the cat prior to the dog appears to conduce to establishing an amicable relationship.

Comparison of the effects of two different handling methods on the subsequent behaviour of Anglo-Arabian foals toward humans and handling
Comparison of the effects of two different handling methods on the subsequent behaviour of Anglo-Arabian foals toward humans and handling
Forced human contact thus appears to be more efficient in improving human–horse relationships and subsequent handling than unforced human contact.

    Brisk hemorrhage after TPLO
But go figure, I thought I must have nailed the popliteal and good, and was ready to unleash all the gel foam west of the mississippi but didn't have to do a thing. Dumb luck? I just remember what my mentor the late Ralph Lewis used to say in surgery (among many other sayings) - "Hell, that bleeder would kill a mouse, so it's a good thing you ain't cutting on a mouse."

    Craigslist donation issues
It would never be worth the aggravation to me. I'd say good bye to these new client beggars, and do without their business. I'd refuse to accept the donations, tell the owner they will need to pay me directly, or they can choose another practice.

Standards of care in spay/neuter programs; impact of low costs spay/neuter clinics on local private practices
If the only people that used these services were the ones that *never* see a veterinarian, then I would see no impact on my practice at all, and this is just not happening.

Analgesics to use for orthopedic surgery when morphine is unavailable; legal worries about loaning or reselling controlled drugs
Why would the DEA care if you buy or borrow some morphine from another clinic as long as they log it dispensed to you and you log it received from them?
