Echocardiographic parameters in 14 healthy English Bull Terriers
These 14 dogs had greater left ventricular wall thickness and smaller aortic root diameters than those reported as normal for other breeds of comparable body size. Left atrial dimensions were also larger and they had higher aortic velocities than those reported for other breeds.

Any chance they were using an ivermectin compound in the feedlot? Many of the signs are suggestive of an ivermectin intoxication (eg., delayed menace, dilated pupils, tremors, general depression).

Basset Problems
My scientific analysis suppports you. An astonishing eighty percent of the dogs I see have "been abused" as pups! Almost none of the problems are because they are untrained, poorly handled, fearful, poorly socialized, or just plain disobedient. None!! It's amazing.
