Hit the Books With the VIN Bookstore!
Looking for the new CVT? Kirk’s Current Veterinary Therapy XIV (2008) is a mainstay of the practicing veterinarian's bookshelf. Numerous succinct chapters provide you with the information that you need right now, and the companion website provides information from CVT XIII, as well as images, laboratory test interpretation and more. Find the new CVT, and much more, in the VIN Bookstore. VIN Members save 10% or more off the list price every day and free shipping on US orders of $90.00 or more. Note: During the past year, visibility and promotion of the VIN Bookstore as a VIN member benefit was greatly reduced. Why? Because despite the savings available, long delivery times diminished the 'benefit'. We are happy to report that those issues have been resolved...and that once again the VIN Bookstore is truly a member benefit. Please tell us what you think. Evaluation of cortisol precursors for the diagnosis of pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism in dogs
The overlaps between the healthy dogs, the dogs with pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism, and the dogs with other diseases suggested that the individual precursor hormones would not be useful as a screening test for hypercortisolism.
Use and abuse of pyrethrins and synthetic pyrethroids in veterinary medicine
The toxicokinetics of pyrethrins and pyrethroids are described, including absorption, distribution, metabolism (including interactions with other compounds affecting drug metabolising enzymes), and excretion, leading to the application of toxicokinetic/toxicodynamic concepts.
Novel oblique radiographic projection of the temporomandibular articulation of horses
A novel radiographic projection is described for assessing part of the temporomandibular articulation of horses. It minimises the superimposition of osseous structures of the cranium that limit the usefulness of conventional projections and permits improved imaging in cases of suspected disease.

Ethanol for ethylene glycol poisoning
I have dehydrated alcohol w/ each mL containing not less than 98% by volume of ethanol (ethyl alcohol). This is the cheapest emergency treatment we could find to keep on our shelves because our clients can't afford the $300 we'd have to charge per vial of other injectable treatments.
Knobby reindeer
I had one reindeer patient who grew absolutely flamboyant pink tumors. These antleromas can occur in wild animals too, and most commonly involves a deer who "self-castrates" by getting caught on a fence.
Can we use acepromazine in animals that have an increased risk of seizures?
I think some dogs might be at increased risk of seizures with acepromazine. So I generally avoid acepromazine in patients with increased risk of seizures. With the variety of sedatives and tranqulizers available, it's usually not difficult to come up with an alternative drug.
