Are Your In-House Blood Analyzers Accurate?
Kendal Harr, DVM, MS, DACVP, and Jennifer Brazzell, DVM, PhD, DACVP want to know. Together with the Quality Assurance and Standards Committee of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology, they've created a Quality Control Survey. Please take the survey, then attend the VIN Rounds "Quality Control of In-House Labs: What Do Your Numbers Really Mean?" on September 7 to see the results and discuss what they mean.

"A Cat is Not a Dog"
As T.S. Elliot so aptly pointed out in 1939, cats are creatures unto their own. For those of you searching for information on diseases and cures for Rum Tum Tugger and Mungojerrie, visit the Feline Internal Medicine Center. Find links to useful FAQs, feline Associate chapters, proceedings, an extensive collection of feline rounds, slide shows and videos and much more!

The Feline Internal Medicine Center can be found in the Specialty and Species area of the VIN Library and on the About this Folder page in the Internal Medicine-Feline folder in the VIN message boards. Keep your eyes peeled for more new information centers coming soon! Have a purrfectly wonderful time browsing this new VIN resource.

Azithromycin therapy of papillomatosis in dogs: a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial
In the azithromycin treatment group, skin lesions disappeared in 10-15 days. There was no recurrence of papillomatosis in the azithromycin treated dogs (follow up 8 months). No adverse effects were seen in either group.

Influence of femoral head and neck conformation on hip dysplasia in the German Shepherd dog
The official Féderation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) hip score was similar in dogs with and without the broomstick-like conformation. We conclude that the broomstick-like conformation is a common finding in the German shepherd dog and has a genetic base.

Timing of left heart base descent in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy and normal dogs
These findings provide insight into the electromechanical uncoupling that occurs in canine idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and identifies new tissue Doppler imaging parameters that can be added to the range of Doppler and echocardiographic parameters used for detecting myocardial failure in the dog.

    Tramadol theft
While catching the culprit in your clinic red handed would be great, the price for violating labor laws and privacy rules that govern this arena would be extremely high, and can subject you to expensive fines and damage awards.

    Starting a relief practice
Like Colin said, start to put together a personal tools collection - stuff you want and/or need that other clinics might not have. I like using #12 blades for declaws, for instance, and I carry a couple of pairs of sterile gloves in my size and digital thermometer, as well. Put a bunch of your favourite reference books in a Rubbermaid tote for your trunk too.

Tularemia in a febrile cat with oral lesions and a history of eating rabbits
If you get a chance and have a copy of Greene's Infectous Disease text, read the chapter on Tularemia. Or do a VIN search. Tularemia, while rare, is spread by rabbits, has oral ulcerations and fever and is a zoonosis.
