Economic Impact Survey Results
From May 7 to July 23, 2009, the VIN community repeated a survey of practice revenues, client visits and perceptions about the impact of the economic downturn to obtain a better perspective of the situation 6 months after the initial Economic Impact Survey.

469 veterinarians completed the November 2008 survey and 267 participated in 2009.

Please take a moment to share your thoughts in the VIN message board discussion, even if you didn't take the survey.

If you participated in another survey and haven't seen the results, check the Surveys and Clinical Research area in the Library.

VIN Student Center: Resources for Students and Old Pros Alike
Zoonotic diseases present an increasing risk to public health and are the greatest link between human and animal medicine.

Learn more about how animal diseases can affect humans and search articles from governmental & university resources in the Public Health and Epidemiology section of the VIN Student Center.

Special thanks to Iowa State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison for their contributions.

Thanks to the continuous efforts of the VIN community, the Student Center has grown into a resource to serve all VINners.

E-mail to Feedback@vin.com if you'd like to contribute to the Student Center and don't forget to share your VIN experience on your school message boards.

Texas Farm Radio

Description and repeatability of a newly developed spinal cord injury scale for dogs
Results from this study suggest that the Texas Spinal Cord Injury Score (TSCIS) is an easy to administer scale for evaluating canine spinal cord injury based on the standard neurological exam and correlates well with a previously described modified Frankel scale.

Copper-associated hepatitis in Labrador retrievers
In 12 of the dogs, quantitative liver copper levels were available, and in all but 2 dogs the levels were greater than 2,000 parts per million dry weight (ppm dw). One dog had a liver copper level of 1,990 ppm dw and one dog with advanced hepatic cirrhosis had a level of 1,490 ppm dw. The findings suggest that primary copper-associated hepatitis likely occurs in Labrador retrievers.

Social network analysis. Review of general concepts and use in preventive veterinary medicine
The objectives of this paper were to review the concepts and theoretical aspects underlying the use of social network analysis (SNA) and graph theory, with particular emphasis on their application to the study of infectious diseases of animals. The paper includes a review of recent applications of SNA in preventive veterinary medicine and a discussion of the potential uses and limitations of this methodology for the study of animal diseases.

Canine influenza vaccine
This is a killed virus vaccine that apparently provides non-sterilizing immunity. Information says that it "lessens the frequency and severity of lung lesions, reduces viral shedding, and reduces duration of coughing." In other words, it does not prevent infection nor does it completely prevent clinical signs of infection.

How long should we keep biopsy samples?
I don't know about the legality of it but how long I keep the samples depends on several things. If I have more than one sample I keep it until the histo results come in and I am happy with or agree with the results. If I get a report in with basically histopath-speak that tells me nothing I keep the samples against the day I might want to submit to someone else depending on the outcome of the case.

Anxious cat needs grooming: drug combination suggestion
He is more than just a little anxious. It is the groomer's request to the owner that is leading up to this. The kitty is great up to the grooming.

No medication without examination: dealing with clients who demand substandard care for their pets
In most industries, the louder the customer complains, the better service/more perks he or she gets. So, we have created a bunch of spoiled monsters who have no concept of consequences to their actions.

Search Tip:
Increase the likelihood of your search returning the results you want by using PHRASES rather than SINGLE WORDS when you search:
- Enter HEARTWORM ANTIGEN TESTS, not just HEARTWORM, if that's what you really want to search.
- General terms like KIDNEY can sometimes be useful, but a more specific descriptor such as RENAL FAILURE or KIDNEY FAILURE is often more helpful.
For more help and tips on searching, see Steps To A More Effective Search.

Funny Bones
Things that make sense to us
One of our techs told her husband that we saw a puppy that had aspirated and turned blue. He was totally perplexed, and asked her what color the dog originally was, and how it could turn blue! He was imagining the whole dog changing color like the horses in the "Wizard of Oz"!
