If It's Not One Thing It's Another...
Thousands of new and updated message board discussions, journal abstracts and other information resources are added to the VIN Database and Library each month.

Above and beyond what the VIN Content Team creates and indexes, many VINners create and contribute up-to-date summaries on timely topics.

Save time. Search the VIN Database, and check the Medical FAQs and the VIN Library -- before you post on the message boards.

Occult bacterial lower urinary tract infections in cats-Urinalysis and culture findings
Our aim was to investigate urinalysis and culture findings in urine specimens from cats with no history of lower urinary tract signs. Study inclusion criteria required cystocentesis specimens from cats with no history of lower urinary tract signs, inappropriate urination, or previous UTI (including pyelonephritis). Of 132 specimens, 38 were culture positive and 94 were culture negative.

Swine Influenza A (H1N1) infection in two children--Southern California, March-April 2009
This report briefly describes the two cases and the investigations currently under way. Although this is not a new subtype of influenza A in humans, concern exists that this new strain of swine influenza A (H1N1) is substantially different from human influenza A (H1N1) viruses, that a large proportion of the population might be susceptible to infection, and that the seasonal influenza vaccine H1N1 strain might not provide protection.

Histological assessment of testicular residues in lambs and calves after Burdizzo castration
In the samples from the calves that had been castrated at 12 to 16 weeks, functional testicular tissue was completely lacking. However, there was evidence of spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis in the calves that had been castrated at one week or four to five weeks, respectively.

In-House pet identification tips
Great question - identifying animals is key to providing care. Not only with a cage card, but also something on the animals so that you can match the animal to the information. It also can help them get adopted if it is done with an eye to the public. Many of the shelter software programs are helpful with cage cards.

What's causing the post-op skin necrosis?
A few thoughts: Likely there are multiple eitologies with an association to anesthesia given that the lesions appear after recovery. But I cannot see cause and effect here. Some lesions may be associated with vasculitis and may be even drug reactions. But it would be hard to point the finger at hypoperfusion as hypotension required to cause skin necrosis would likely also cause internal organ dysfunction. Skin ( somewhat like adipose tissue) is not a particularly highly metabolic organ and so can tolerate decreased oxygen tension better than say the brain or the kidney.

Detailed tips for in-home euthanasia
The lateral saphenous vein is great for most dogs, but will often not work as well in the really small dogs. The vein runs anteriodistal to caudoproximal, above the hock. Place your tourniquet above the stifle, or have your holder restrain there.

Funny Bones:
Kids say the darndest things
A very sad young couple with two small children came in to put their beloved Mastiff down, who was demonstrating potentially dangerous aggression to the kids. After the deed was done, mom light-heartedly said "Now maybe we can trim her nails", to which the young son replied, "Why would we do that? She's dead."

TECH175-0809: Nutrition Basics for the Canine and Feline
August 3-August 31, 2009

The importance of the role of nutrition is being increasingly recognized for both dogs and cats, but if you are like most technicians you get little to no nutrition information in school. This course builds on the basics of biology, chemistry and biochemistry to introduce the fundamentals of nutrition. We will look at the roles of energy and water, the 6 classes of nutrients as well as digestion, absorption and energy balance.

For information on other CE courses check out the Course Catalog on the CE Main Page.

Please visit How-To's Of Online CE for details about how to register and participate in online CE courses.

If you're looking for information on CE opportunities for veterinary technicians, receptionists or practice managers, please visit the VSPN CE page. VSPN offers courses tailored to veterinary support personnel, and certain VIN courses also are open to VPSN members.
