VIN CE: Intermediate Herbal Medicine

A few more spaces are available for the Intermediate Herbal Medicine course. This course will explore broad areas of herbal medicine to a more advanced degree than the 2002 introductory course, including history, zoopharmacognosy, materia medica, toxicology and ethnobotany. It will include information to help candidates prepare for herbal medicine boards (VBMA), or simply serve as an opportunity to interact with teachers and cutting-edge thinkers in the field.

Pre-requisites: VIN CE 2002 Introduction to Veterinary Herbal Medicine or any online Herbal Medicine taught by Dr. Wynn, or the approval of the instructor.

If you're interested in taking this course, but missed VIN's 2002 Introduction to Herbal Medicine course, please contact Ginger Sanders at the VIN office (800.700.4636 or email CEonVIN@vin.com) to explore your options.

Comparison of radiographic assessments of the tibial plateau slope in dogs
Measurements made by use of a line tangential to the cranial, linear portion of the medial tibial condyle at the femorotibial contact point were accurate measurements of the anatomic tibial plateau slope (TPS). Measurements made by use of the conventional TPS measurement method underestimated the anatomic TPS.

Dimensions and histologic characteristics of the small intestine of dogs during postnatal development
Increases in intestinal dimensions provide growing dogs with a greater capacity for digestion and absorption. Changes in mucosal architecture and cell populations coincided with shifts in dietary inputs.

Determination and correlation of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in dogs and cattle from Mexico
These results suggest the possible transmission of the parasite from dogs to cattle.

Loss of Deep Pain Sensation Following Thoracolumbar Intervertebral Disk Herniation in Dogs: Treatment and Prognosis
The withdrawal reflex should not be interpreted as a positive response when evaluating deep pain perception. Management of patients with complete spinal cord injury following thoracolumbar disk herniation consists of immediate treatment with methylprednisolone sodium succinate, emergency surgical decompression, and supportive care.

Epistaxis In vWD Dog
In type I vWD dogs, desmopressin sometimes causes a transient rise in plasma vWf levels. Somehow or another, desmopressin triggers the release of vWf stored in vascular endothelial cells. There is no guarantee that it will work in all dogs, but in an emergency it is worth trying.

Aortic Abnormalities: Classic For Heartworm?
If ever in doubt about vascular identity of the lung field, it is a relatively safe and easy proceedure to rapidly inject IV contrast at approx 1ml/lb thru a large bore catheter via the jugular vein and take a radiographic exposure approx 3-4 seconds into the injection.

Referral Veterinarians Think Our Emergency Clinic Is Too Expensive
My favorite comment is, "My vet said that he/she could have done this work for half the price." My response is, "Where was your vet at 2 am?"

Diagnostic Workup For Fish
Working up an anorectic fish is just like doing it on a dog or cat. Lots of history, rule-outs, and testing. I will start by pasting in the class notes about fish diagnostics ...
