There was a high level of comfort (strong evidence) for the efficacy of carprofen, firocoxib, and meloxicam, and a moderate level of comfort for the efficacy of etodolac, in modifying the signs of osteoarthritis. There was a moderate level of comfort for the efficacy of glycosaminoglycan polysulphate, licofelone, elk velvet antler, and a functional food containing green-lipped mussel for the modification of the structures involved in the disease.
Evaluation of blood oxidant/antioxidant balance in dogs with sarcoptic mange
Lipid hydroperoxide level, total oxidant status, and oxidative stress index in dogs with sarcoptic mange were higher than the control. Our results suggest a possible relationship between oxidant/antioxidant imbalance and sarcoptic mange infestation in dogs.
Avian influenza virus in water: Infectivity is dependent on pH, salinity and temperature
The Avian Influenza (AI) viruses varied in their response to each of the examined variables, but, generally, the viruses were most stable at a slightly basic pH (7.4-8.2), low temperatures (less than 17 degrees C), and fresh to brackish salinities (0-20,000 parts per million).

Physician told client to have her cat treated for cat scratch fever
I wouldn't test the cat. It would have to be culture positive for you to be sure it is carrying Bartonella. And then what? Most cats don't carry this organism for more than a couple of years, and young cats are more of a risk. Once you start testing you'll need a plan, whether the test is positive or negative, and this can turn into a prolonged testing/retesting situation. And ... the cat can be reinfected after you're sure you've cleared it with antibiotics.
Planned cesarean
C-sections cannot be planned based on breeding date, as the due date is 63 days post ovulation. The length of semen life makes a due date from breeding impossible to calculate.Numerous studies have shown that <3 pups makes a c-section more likely. I would monitor temperature drop, look for colostrum being present, check vaginal relaxation, watch for signs of labor and possibly even do a serum progesterone level to ascertain the correct time for the c-section and the greatest chance of live, term puppies.
Asymptomatic Cavalier King Charles spaniel with loud heart murmur: anesthetize for dental procedures?
Anesthetic risk depends on level of cardiac performance, not loudness of the murmur. Most of the time, asymptomatic mitral regurgitation patients are tolerant of short anesthetic procedures -- as long as ...
Chronic arthritis in a dog: pain relief suggestions
In patients with severe osteoarthritis, we have to be aggressive in our pain management to maintain both musculoskeletal and cardiovascular condition. Analgesia is first priority.
