What Do YOU Think? VTW Readership Survey
Twice a week you receive this "VIN This Week" email newsletter.

The VIN This Week Team would love to know what you think (anonymously of course), about the VIN This Week(end) newsletters they prepare for you.

Please help us help you and all VINners by responding to this short survey. The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete.

Calculate with Confidence
You don't have to be Einstein to do these clinically useful calculations, but it sure is nice to be able to check yourself (or simply get the answers faster) using the growing collection of VIN Calculators.

  • Constant Rate Infusion
  • Phlebotomy
  • Transfusion
  • Energy Requirements
  • Converting to and from SI Units
  • Body Surface Area
  • Echocardiography Normals

Let the VIN Calculators do the math for you, and save your scrap paper for doodling.

Lost In The Library?
Thus far feedback regarding the newly reorganized VIN Library has been positive.

But we know change can be difficult, so if getting familiar with the new VIN Library is causing you stress, the VIN Library Team would love to know about it.

If you are struggling to find the new location of items in the Library or determine whether certain resources are housed in the Library, please refer to the information in the Library Help Center. Instructions in the box on the right-hand column of the Library page will help orient you.

If you're still lost, and need immediate help, please email feedback@vin.com or call membership services at 1-800-700-4636.

If you have ideas for how to make the Library even better or want to offer feedback, please contact us at Library@vin.com. We welcome your suggestions!

Battered pets and domestic violence: animal abuse reported by women experiencing intimate violence and by nonabused women
Women residing at domestic violence shelters (S group) were nearly 11 times more likely to report that their partner had hurt or killed pets than a comparison group of women who said they had not experienced intimate violence (NS group). Reports of threatened harm to pets were more than 4 times higher for the S group.

Direct and indirect costs of rabies exposure: a retrospective study in southern California (1998-2002)
The mean total cost of a suspected human rabies exposure was $3,688, the direct costs per case were $2,564, and the indirect costs were $1,124 of that total. About one third of the total cost for suspected human rabies exposure was attributed to indirect costs (e.g., lost wages, transportation, and day-care fees), most of which were not reimbursable to the patient.

Prevalence of feline immunodeficiency virus infection in domesticated and feral cats in eastern Australia
The feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) prevalence in the two feral cat populations was 21 percent and 25 percent. The majority of FIV-positive cats were male (60-80 percent). The FIV prevalence in cattery-confined cats was nil. The prevalence of FIV in the pet cat sample population was 8 percent.

Spinal cord injury resulting from incorrect microchip placement in a cat
Myelography demonstrated obliteration of the contrast columns by the microchip at the C5-C6 intervertebral disc space. A dorsal laminectomy was undertaken and the microchip was successfully removed. Eleven months after the surgery, the cat was able to weight bear in all limbs but with mild residual paresis in the left thoracic limb.

Box induction for feline induction: avoid except in very limited circumstances
About 18 months ago, every patient received torb for premed and telazol for induction. It took around six months to really become familiar with the different protocols. Today, the level of care my patients receive is far superior. I now enjoy anesthesia and look at most cases as an enjoyable dance instead of a slightly out of control adventure.

Helpful hints for new graduates about to embark on the first job
Nobody asked me, but I wanted to make a few observations that the 2007 grads might find helpful ...

How to manage controlled drugs, prescription foods, and uncontrolled drugs on a mobile unit
I have a mobile practice unit with a lock on the outside. Inside there area two locked drawers for drugs. The only class II drugs I have are morphine and fentanyl patches. Do they have to be in the drawer alone? Can or should I put the class II drugs in a lock box in the locked drawer?

Intracavity administration of chemotherapy for adenocarcinoma of the thorax
There is a published report on intracavitary, although I have not been able to achieve the same numbers as far as survival.
