Meet the VIN Consultants!
If the Database is the "brains" of VIN, the Message Boards are the Heart and Soul of VIN. Whether you are a frequent poster, lurker, or mostly read the Boards when discussions come up in your database searches, you've probably wondered... "Who are those seemingly tireless folks giving their time and energy to help so many VINner's every day?" Meet the VIN Consultant Team -- 185 of the most dedicated and talented leaders in veterinary medicine monitoring and facilitating clinical discussions that help us all be better clinicians while helping individual VINners manage THEIR cases. Are you a Specialist who loves helping (and learning from) your colleagues? Call Paul D. Pion, DVM, DipACVIM (Cardiology) at 530-757-6881 or email to Paul@vin.com.

Screening for skin carriage of methicillin-resistant coagulase-positive staphylococci and Staphylococcus schleiferi in dogs with healthy and inflamed skin
Methicillin resistance rates of 41% for Staphylococcus aureus, 16% for S. intermedius, and 40% for S. schleiferi have recently been reported in canine patients. These were deemed to be reflective of referral and clinician-selection biases, which would imply significantly lower methicillin-resistant staphylococcal carriage rates in less-biased canine populations.
Pathogenesis of canine interdigital palmar and plantar comedones and follicular cysts, and their response to laser surgery
Laser surgery allowed removal of multiple layers of cysts and adjacent hair follicles and the tracking and removal of sinuses. One dog was euthanized for orthopaedic lameness 1 month after laser surgery, but post-surgical follow-up (1.0-8.0 years - mean 3 years) from the remaining 27 dogs revealed that laser therapy of affected skin and adjacent hair follicles resulted in resolution of interdigital lesions in 25.

What's the value of pre-surgical bloodwork?
Are you keeping track on how many phone calls about prices for spay/neuter you are getting and the percentage of these calls that you actually are booking?
Oral therapy for lymphoma?
None of these as single agents are shown to improve lifespan in this setting. If there are no clinical signs to palliate, my suggestion would be not to treat at all.
What are recent graduates looking for in their first job?
I knew I was going to have to "grow my own" if I ever wanted a full time associate that would stay here. My new grad has family here and always wanted to return and work here. She has been working for me since high school. You have to get one of those, a high school student who wants to be a vet and has family there, and is willing to come back to that area.
Diagnosing a dog with detruser instability; importance of urine culture before the use of antibiotics
One of the problems we have is that around here, people have this mindset that if the animal has an accident in the house, it's a UTI. The truth is, a minority of these are true UTIs!
